Well. You just describe all the advantages why i use docker in my day to day dev.. :D

freckles is not designed for orchestration
So is Docker. Docker is just an abstraction like a VM. Docker-compose on the otherhand is for orchestration of multiple Docker Containers.

it's really primarily about having a reproducible way of setting up a machine (be it physical, virtual, or a container)

And exactly this is what Docker Images do. You write a Dockerfile where you grab a Baseimage and do your stuff. This image can run on Windows, Linux, Mac in Production or locally..

I just want to describe my routine when i go for a new WordPress Project just like in your example:

I have made a WordPress Docker Image with everything installed. That means i have a Dockerfile somewhere in my Company-Git where i describe how the Image should look like and a Docker Repository where Developers can grab that Image. Now if i or some other dev want to develop a new Theme for example they simply write a docker-compose.yml with the following content:

  wp:
    image: path.to.my.git/wordpress:tag
    volumes: 
       - ./local/theme/files:/var/www/html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/
    ports: 8080:80

Every dev is now working with the same foundation in a matter of seconds.
