Competitor Keyword Gap Analysis Using Claude AI + Google Keyword Planner

Suggested category: AI Marketing Use Cases, or APIs for Marketers Meta description: How to find the keywords your competitors are likely targeting but you aren't, using Claude and the Google Keyword Planner MCP connector.

A keyword gap analysis, finding terms with real search demand that your own campaigns or content aren't covering, is normally a manual cross-reference between your own keyword list and a competitor's visible terms. With the Keyword Planner MCP tool connected, Claude can help build that comparison directly.

The approach

Give Claude your current keyword list (from an export, or pasted directly) along with a description of your competitor's positioning or product category. Ask something like: "Here are the keywords we're currently targeting. Find related keyword opportunities in this category that aren't on this list, and rank them by search volume." Claude uses the Keyword Planner tool to pull the broader category's keyword universe, then compares it against what you gave it.

What you get back

A list of keywords with real search volume and competition data that fall outside your current targeting, the gap. Because the underlying data is the same Keyword Planner data advertisers already trust, the volumes and competition scores are the same figures you'd see in Google Ads itself.

A practical use

This works well as a recurring check rather than a one-time report. Re-running the same comparison quarterly, as your own keyword list grows, surfaces new gaps as search behavior shifts, without rebuilding the comparison from scratch each time.

Getting started

This uses the same Google Keyword Planner MCP tool covered in our PPC keyword research guide, connected once through the Smacient Claude connector.
