Completely lost when it comes to marketing

Hello everyone,

Just launched my first product today: https://slides2video.com

I come from an engineering background and the product works well... I just don't know how to get it out there effectively. I've used Google adwords for other projects before, but not very effectively.

I have a blog, and I write content regularly enough. I have a facebook page. I don't know anything about Twitter, and even less about other social networks. As this is a bootstrapped product, I don't really want to spend a lot of money on marketing, but I want the money I do spend to be effective (ha... don't we all!)

Is anyone willing to offer some marketing advice? I would be happy to reciprocate by answering any technical questions.

Travis

Hey there! I run a newsletter that helps founders get better at marketing: Zero to Marketing.

Marketing Examples is another great one.

This is awesome - thanks for sharing.

Just embed a youtube video with a sample that was generated using your service, so user can see what it can produce without registration and waiting..

Also the background color of your site is very "unserious" like it's for some game or movie. I wouldn't trust a product with such color of background on its homepage.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm not the best at web design, so this is really useful. I'm working on redoing my main page.

Agree with this, I don't want to have to paste the link to see how it works. If it's able to make a video, just show me the video directly.

The color of the homepage is very strong for my eyes, makes me nauseous, and the writing is very small and hard to read.

I would promote it in communities of marketers, a lot of them struggle with creating videos for social ads, but are good at making presentations.

@tathougies You seem like e perfect candidate for the beta group we're going to be gathering for our "Agency as a Service" platform. If you're interested, fill this out (private beta will start June 15!): https://www.phlywheel.com/betakit/

It seems like a really cool product, but I think you should show a working example on your main page. I wanted to see what it looks like, so I could understand the product, but it's complicated. Gotta click the examples, copy the URL, then deal with the email capture gate, etc. Make it more frictionless to get people excited about the product before getting them to sign up. Just my two cents.

Who is this for? Whose life will be made much easier if they had your app?

Start there. Off the top of my head, I could see educators and course sellers using this to kickstart their YouTube presence.

Maybe start there? You aren't positioning your product at all, just merely describing it, so it's hard to figure out whom it's for and also what sort of emotional benefits you're offering that would inspire people to take action and sign up.

Also, where did you get this idea from?

PS The tawk.to widget at the bottom is quite jarring, maybe change the color to match the rest of your color scheme?

A list I've been sharing around that I think would be helpful is a list of 19 possible channels:

    https://medium.com/@yegg/the-19-channels-you-can-use-to-get-traction-93c762d19339

But I would start with things that don't scale. Reach out to people in your network who might be interested!

I think it's important not to overthink or overcomplicate marketing as a beginner. I'm not a developer and I have no idea where to start with all the options and advice there is on how to learn to code... from reading your post I imagine you have similar issue being lost but about marketing.

I recommend you keep it simple instead of trying to figure out all these different marketing channels you have heard about.

Focus on what your product does and to whom? What issue does your product solve? Who has this particular issue? Where do people with that issue hang out online, where do they go to find help or who do they ask for help around this issue? Who else solves this particular issue and what are they doing in their communication?

Answering these few questions will lead you in the direction of what you need to do and where you need to go in order to find and connect with your audience.

Content marketing is not a bad place to start and I would rather recommend that than paid advertising. As you already write regularly on the blog, try to see how you can focus the content a bit more on the audience you are targeting and on answering the questions they have. Here's a post on how we do blogging for Plausible Analytics, perhaps it can give you some inspiration: How one blog post changed the traction for my startup.

In the very early stage that you are in, I recommend finding and talking to users 1 on 1 either via cold email, social media, forums, meetups, etc...

Presumably you have someone in mind for who makes your ideal customer. Find where they hang out either online or in real life. And reach out. Use The Mom Test as a guide for how to talk to them.

    DON'T SPEND MONEY ON ADS!

Marketing is damn tough. Doing one thing might not translate to direct sales but doing multiple things over time will.

I know you say you are writing a blog but what are the topics? Is it stuff that your target audience is interested in? Is it optimized around specific keywords? If you aren't already using Neil Patel's UberSuggest, you should use that. For the writing part, use this program called INK which is free and helps you optimize your content. Oh and put your blog on a SUBDIRECTORY not subdomain. Huge difference for SEO.

For social, follow and interact with your competitor's audience. Build that relationship and they will give you money. The more followers you can build up, the more people will trust your company.

Googling you, it seems that there is a software called Slides 2 Video as well. Are you set on the name you are using? I would honesty be skeptical of any company that uses numbers in place of words like you do. While the name communicates the product quickly, you don't want to be mixed in with the other search results.

Finally, your landing page is not appealing. Even if you get traffic, I cannot imagine people converting. Took me about 20 seconds to figure out what you wanted me to do and didn't really show me WHY I should do it. Include more info about what the VALUE you provide is. Show an example of what the output could be. There's a ton of articles on how to optimize a landing page on the internet so check those out and work on it.

Do not buy ads until everything else is optimized and you are getting traction. Spending money on ads is easy but ultimately fruitless if you don't do the rest of the stuff I mentioned above. Good luck!
