A lot of the time, I see the terms "content marketing" and "blogging" being used interchangeably.
Do you think they're different? If so, how so?
When does a blog post become content marketing, and what types of content marketing have you seen or created that aren't on a blog?
I've got a fair number of thoughts on this and I'd love to hear how other IH'ers think about it.
Content marketing is platform agnostic. Blogging, YouTube videos, Twitter threads... it’s all content marketing.
This
this sums up my thoughts as well!
+1 to this.
I see it as blogging being just one part of content marketing.
A list of what would come under 'content marketing' could be useful. 😇
yeah, that would be great!
I think content marketing focuses on answering questions, where as blogging is more about sharing. Like sharing your experience, your thoughts, things you've made, etc.
I'm not sure if it's correct, but the distinction I always make is that content marketing tends to have the goal of providing useful content with an end goal in mind (getting traffic, sales, etc.) whereas blogging can be more general (still providing content, but can also just be random updates, stories, etc.) and doesn't necessarily have a goal in mind.
Content Marketing is everything about selling your product off your website. You create content aimed at driving customer's to your site. You create content that solves their problem and engages them with your brand and it is not only about writing (everything you do and make to reach your audience is content - like email, social media, video & more)
Blogging is creating content to connect with people who share common values with you. Blogging is about creating valuable content that helps people. Blogging is about creating true connections.
The differences without getting too specific are as follows:
Content Marketing = A way of marketing that focuses primarily on creating and distributing unique, relevant, and consistent content to attract and acquire a clearly defined audience — with the objective of driving profitable customer action. (Usually content marketing is all about SEO focused with keyword ranking)
Blogging = A blog is a personal diary or journal. It usually includes commentary and commentary.
Using content for marketing is content marketing. Whereas blogging need not necessarily be for marketing purpose: you have something to say, so you say it.
Content marketing can happen anywhere there is room for content, in any format or medium. Blogging is...well, blogging.
Content marketing requires a well thought out strategy for it to work; it has goals, it has data analytics, it usually has a funnel. But with blogging you can start from anywhere & it may or may not have goals etc. It can just be your place to express your thoughts & views.
Blogging is, essentially, a tiny subset of content marketing.
Content marketing is a holistic approach towards having a marketing strategy for your product or service on digital platforms. Blogging, on the other hand, is more of a journey documentation process, where you go into the depths of a certain topic, to deeply educate your readers.
For my product, www.ruttl.com, I decided to establish a carefully designed content marketing plan. Slowly, after gaining pace, I have started to create my own blogs as well. These are covering several topics from my social media posts as well, except that it is meant to communicate a deeper understanding of the topic to a small fraction of the targeted audience.
