Contractors of IH: What's your biggest headache?
I've recently started working as an IT Contractor, and so far have been annoyed by:
- Chasing invoices
- Managing recruiters
- Figuring out what skills to earn to maximise my earnings
What has annoyed you? Do you use any tools or products to make things easier?
Any luck with these? Have you found any tools that make it better? How is filling the work pipeline going?
Apologies for the delayed response. I solved a few of my own problems by just getting a better system in place for generating invoices via Zoho, very happy with it. I know that in general quite a few contractors who go direct have trouble getting invoices paid on time, but I don't think this is specific to IT contractors.
Other problems I think are more general to self-employed people - keeping track of finances and tax obligations, ensuring that you are paying into your retirement savings, etc.
I've not had much problem finding work so far - first job I got by spamming linkedin contacts, second job I got when I bumped into a colleague from a company I used to work for. There's no shortage of work to do, just depends if the work is exactly what you want to do. React jobs seem all the rage where I am, but it's not really what I want to do for example.
