Conversion tactics from a co-founder who bootstrapped to 400+ customers

I interviewed Esben Friis-Jensen, co-founder of Userflow. They make a tool to improve onboarding and have bootstrapped to 400 customers and counting.

The interview focuses on how they improved their trial to paid conversion. Here's what he taught me:

  1. You want to figure out your “aha!” moment via qualitative customer data (Esben figured theirs out mostly by reading support messages)

  2. You want to measure leading indicators of conversion (time spent is a leading indicator for Userflow - if a trial spends 30+ mins in their editor, they're more likely to convert)

  3. You want to invest heavily in reducing onboarding friction (Userflow even built a Chrome Extension so new trials wouldn't need a developer to use Userflow)

The full conversation is chock full of insights from a man who spends his time thinking about onboarding since Userflow helps product-led SaaS teams improve trial to paid conversion.
