Convince me to not build my own newsletter software
Hey,
I'm looking to start building a newsletter soon, and the pricing for existing newsletters seems ridiculous. I can spend probably a week or so building my own newsletter infrastructure with Amazon SES, and pay a tremendous fraction of what the big players are charging.
My question is, what are the reasons for me to NOT do this? Where will I be shooting myself in the foot? What are some of the pitfalls?

Is this newsletter software for you or do you intend to make a product out of it?
If it is only for you in order to save money, you should be aware that spending a lot of time vs spending $5-10/mo (e.g. sendx.io), might not be worth it. However, it will obviously be good practice!
If you intend to build a product, I would just caution that newsletter are a very crowded space.
Nah, this is for myself. Won't be building a newsletter product off this. I'd just be using it for my own newsletter.
If nothing else, it sounds like a great learning opportunity. Even if it doesn't become a business, or something that you wish to monetize, you'll hopefully be left with a new set of skills and concepts that you can apply to different, perhaps unrelated, projects.
N.B. I'm a lisp developer. My first step is to reinvent the wheel.
You don't need to build from scratch to avoid crazy pricing for newsletter software. Check out for example sendy (https://sendy.co) one time purchase and you hook it up with AWS SES and you can send a lot of emails.
Yeah, I'll have to dig more into the existing newsletter platforms, and see if there's an affordable option that fits my needs. Sendy.co looks good.

I do not think that you have to spend a lot of money. Start easy, Mailchimp + Notion
I will suggest go for it. A new experience with great learning opportunity.
