Nice article! Reminds me of a great book, the Power of habits from Charles Duhigg. It's all about cues, routines (can be a ritual) and rewards. Here's an article that covers the topic:
I'm not sure what the difference is between a ritual, a twitchy habit, and an engagement loop is. But some ideas:
your app is intended to be used at a specific time of day. I have a daily deals website that I imagine is part of someone's daily notification-clearing/headline-reading pass.
Instagram double-tap liking. I see people where they like everything as a "I saw this already" sort of thing.
a twitchy habit like trying to pull as far down as possible on the pull-to-refresh (or swipe-left). Or waiting for a loading screen and twitching the mouse around.
One of my latest projects is supposed to be a "ritual product". I personally use it for a daily 10 minute ideation ritual. But I'm not sure if anyone else uses it that way too.
Comes to mind. We use it at my company whenever we do retrospectives. Starting to become part of the ritual here .
Se are also trying to build habit loops into our product inkrement.io to make it part of the feedback ritual or ask , but not as easy a defined meeting

Hmm this is what I read
“ Even better if your ritual is before the product is consumed and some time passes between the two.
Effects
When people follow a ritual before or when consuming a product they:”
I thought a ritual before the product is consumes would match what we do which is we start the retro and right away think of using parabol

Agreed on the gaming one, feel like most people just want to jump in and play the game without having to adjust something every time.
