Creating a Database Site (IMDB, Crunchbase)

I'd like to create a database sites (e.g. IMDB, Crunchbase) and was wondering if anyone has had luck building off Wordpress themes and plugins. Any suggestions? Not sure which site I'd try to make first but a few I've considered over the years have been databases on quotes, cryptos, comedians, or dance moves.
