About a year ago, I tweeted out that I was looking for a few other SaaS founders to start a group DM:
That tweet took off WAY more than I was expecting, and soon we had a group DM on Twitter with around 50 SaaS founders who were over $20k MRR.
It was a complete mess. Group DMs tend to fall apart when there are more than 10 people or so.
So I decided to create a community on Circle called "SaaS Friends", and moved everyone over from the group DM.
Today, we crossed over 260 members in the SaaS Friends community (it's free to join for those that qualify).
Where have the members come from?
The first 50 or so came from the tweet mentioned above.
After that, I would send DMs to founders to invite them if I saw a tweet or IH post where they say they crossed $20k MRR or more.
Recently, there has been a lot of word-of-mouth growth: founders requesting to join after hearing about SaaS Friends from an existing member.
Why is it only for SaaS founders over $20k MRR?
I've actually taken a lot of flak for this, and figured I'd get ahead of it before someone asked 😅
When you reach $20k+ MRR, your problems and areas of focus become a lot different from those who are earlier on in their SaaS journey.
There is also a lot more to lose from sharing openly. Some members of SaaS Friends have told me that they are much more comfortable asking questions in a small-ish private community where they know that their competitors can't snoop.
The dynamics of the SaaS Friends community just wouldn't work if anyone could join.
