Curious to understand the motivation behind building in public :)
Hi all,
Of late, I have seen a lot of activity online about building in public (on Indie hackers, Twiiter, wip.chat, makerlog etc.). Was wondering what the motivation behind putting the effort to share updates on a daily basis is!
Please help me understand this phenomenon better by choosing one of the option above or adding a comment with your opinion!

For me, the biggest benefit has been accountability. But another unintended consequence was that it increased my "luck surface area".
Basically, my blog has opened doors to opportunities like guest posting, podcast appearances, and networking with other prominent entrepreneurs I otherwise wouldn't have access to.

Just curious, did those people approach you first? Or did you approach them first and they were like (Hey I know you from X)?
A mixture of both.
The first four, but more importantly, building in public is "convex" (small down-side risks but large potential up-side gains).
Thank you for sharing your perspective! What would you consider as the key risks associated with build in public?
The only real risk is reputational, and people are very forgiving. On the noisy net nobody really cares what your are doing anyway, let alone if you fail.
I think for me is the realization that a lot of the people I follow online are doing similar things to what I'm doing, they're just doing it in public. And reaping rewards from it.
It also adds a layer of accountability for sure. Making your work visible is a powerful tool. I got my first job in software by working in public on LinkedIn. You never know who might read your story and connect. You might influence someone's life or make a new connection, and even make some sales!

Help me understand what you mean by building in public? Are you writing code then writing about the process, or livestreaming while you code?
Not necessarily. By building in public, I am talking about keeping your metrics, updates about what you are building day to day open to the public!
