In the bustling landscape of artificial intelligence, finding your unique space can be a challenging pursuit. This has been my experience as the founder of FoxFlow, a startup committed to creating AI-powered solutions.
Just a month ago, I launched FoxFlow (foxflowai.com), an AI-based automation tool for task management based on text prompts. The underlying idea was to leverage the capabilities of language models, much like ChatGPT, but with a focus on workflow automation. I believed this could revolutionize the way tasks were managed in many industries.
However, as I worked on the minimum viable product, I saw an influx of similar products entering the market. Big players such as ChatGPT released plugins, and tray.io launched Merlin. Suddenly, my idea, which once seemed unique, was surrounded by comparable offerings. These new entries targeted different audiences, which made my search for a "blue ocean"—an uncontested market space—even more complex.
Upon reflecting on the situation, I concluded that the approach required a strategic adjustment. The primary objective should not be to outperform existing models or compete directly, but to alter the focus. This understanding steered me back to the fundamentals: the necessity of customer comprehension. Instead of hastily developing AI solutions for a customer base I was unfamiliar with, it would be more prudent to employ AI to gain a deeper understanding of my customers and their needs.
As my first step in this direction, I developed a product and customer discovery bot. This tool sped up the interviewing process, providing quicker insights into potential customers and market gaps. Of course, this doesn't mean I've given up on in-person meetings. Instead, I found this bot to be an invaluable addition to my arsenal.
