In feedback from my soft-launch of NotifyCore, there's clear interest in the fact that customers can log and monitor jobs without a) sending detailed log data to a 3rd party or b) giving a 3rd party access to their infrastructure. It's a design principle I took from the start, but it wasn't something I expected people to get excited about. I've only recently noted such value on the site, and it's more of a footnote.
It's a difficult tradeoff. Given I'm building out more robust reporting and analysis of job data going forward, I'll have to get creative to ensure I continue to only collect minimal data from the customer.
Does anyone have thoughts on, or know of examples of companies that are offering an alternative to products that either collect personal data or require a customer to give access to all of their data? I'd love to learn about other products that not only succeeded (or failed) by explicitly limiting access to unnecessary data, but made it a differentiator. Thanks!
I know ProtonMail, an email provider with focus on privacy and encryption: www.protonmail.com
They are quite successful with that USP.
Regarding your product, I agree with the previous comment that self-hosting is a compliance necessity for many companies, to make sure they can own & control their data. Also with GDPR in mind, EU-based companies can't really use US SaaS products if the data is hosted outside the EU.
Ah, ProtonMail is a great example. Thank you!
I worked on the security team at my last job. Security was extremely important to the business and vetting vendors was a huge part of the security team's time. Basically, if a vendor didn't have an on premises version available, it was basically a no-go. I think customers (especially bigger customers) would really dig a version of NotifyCore they could install on their own servers to use internally.
Thanks, that's helpful insight. I've been thinking about ways I can sell an on-prem version without adding too much complexity and cost for services. It does feel like a path to explore.
