It is real! There is a proven high correlation between companies understanding their data and revenue! Ex: Google, Facebook, Amazon, Netflix... The art of analyzing your data and converting it into revenue is what Data Scientist do.
Data Scientist is a rather broad description. Most of the job description which is looking for Data Scientist is usually covers some simple analytics work. Nevertheless, the demand is high, and if you know how to deal with data either in Excel or with some scripting language like R or Python and can run some regression models, then you are 80% qualified for most of the Data Scientist jobs. A lot of mid and large organizations are currently building up teams with these capabilities. Historically Data Scientist was called by many different names like an analyst, BI expert, etc. So it is not really a new phenomenon and it won't go away for a long time mainly because a new qualified workforce is low compared to the demand. Surely, it will be called something else by HR people five years from now.
True, though I find jobs that are ambiguous/broad in scope to be risky to go into, because it's so different from company to company and it's hard to know what to expect or know what is expected of you.
Most people who are technical enough to succeed in a DS role should probably just make the jump to being a SWE with a data or ML focus. The opportunity set is much larger.
Until the great war that cuts off all technology, data will only continue to grow exponentially and someone needs to science that shit (organize it into meaningful chunks).
I would think lots of the easiest data science jobs will be eaten away by automation but of course high-end jobs no more so than any other cognitively demanding thing...

Could you explain why do you think that "Data Scientist career is a waste of time!"? What do you mean exactly by "Data scientist", in which domain?
