Database as a service and beyond? ๐Ÿค”

I have seen a lot of services popping up lately that make it easier to deploy an application on the serverless infrastructure. As a full-stack developer, I can swear by these services. And I love how MongoDB cloud lets you manage and deploy databases on the go. MongoDB Atlas makes collaboration incredibly easy and seamless and saves a ton of development time thanks to the robust library and cloud approach.

However, there was also a recent shift toward the SQL-based database like PostgreSQL. And ever since I started using Sequelize I'm more convinced that I can use PostgreSQL in many of my projects over Mongo.

Now what bothers me is that there is no service similar to MongoDB Atlas that serves SQL users. There are DBaaS providers out there but they are not fully grown as Atlas or ultra-focused on databases. They either do not provide full support and often lack the features that make services like MongoDB so appealing in the first place. Iโ€™m looking for something beyond just deploying a database and thatโ€™s it. I'm so obsessed with this that I recently wrote a small UI that allows me to create a PostgreSQL database on my local machine. And I wonder if this is something you ever thought of?

https://planetscale.com/ is full on focused on MySQL hosting. https://railway.app/ also has decent PostgreSQL hosting options.

No, I have not thought about this. There are tons of Managed Postgres providers out there. From the "fully managed, no control" to the "fully managed, but you can do whatever you want if you like that", lots of offerings worldwide.

Is being multi-cloud that relevant to your use case? Also to that of others? If so, how come that it is not more common in the Postgres world?

Hi @jansroka multi-cloud is totally fine. The idea is to have services build around the managed databases like user permissions, roles, tigger management and functions.

Like how Zapier and other integration platform support PostgreSQL. However, there has to be a standalone platforms that can seamlessly integrate the SQL databases with all other SaaS products.

A recent shift to SQL-based databases? It's more like MongoDB was a little fling for a few.

There are lots of specialized services on top of any cloud provider offering managed databases. If you need one example for all it would be Citus[0].

ScaleGrid and DigitalOcean also offers high availability Postgres clusters, render.com offer a nice Postgres setup but I think it does not have automatic failover yet.

ScaleGrid looks promising. I have used DigitalOcean only to realize that they are much expensive and DO's managed databases works best with their own products.

There are definitely a bunch of these!

People have noted these in the comments, but basically:

I guess the compose.com is finally shutting down operations years after IBM acquisition.

CosmosDB is probably the best. You like SQL? it works. You like no-SQL? it works. it's also cheaper to get than just SQL server. The only issue is try to find one available...

    Check out Supabase.

Hi Poehah, I have just used Supabase and found it works charms with user authentication and some other basic stuff. Although it still feels like something in beta or early stage. Would love to see how it folds in the future.

What would be the main difference between your DB service and AWS RDS?

    1. 1

@LEONWEI -- I was about to ask the same thing!

@shiv -- AWS and Azure both have serverless as well as managed relational databases. If you've already explored those, could you elaborate more on what you're looking for?
