This journey will outline the road to growing the subscriber list of a marketing newsletter called Noise Cutters. I'll share what works, what hasn't worked, the number of sign-ups each day, etc. I will be completely open about the whole journey with the main goal of giving you valuable insights that you can implement for your own marketing efforts.
The newsletter is focused on the marketing and startup world. and will feature case studies such as:
Growing your blog to 100,000 visitors
Getting 50,000+ Beta user sign-ups
Getting 2,000 new users from a ProductHunt launch
The main reason to start this newsletter is that actual great marketing content is so hard to find. Most marketing articles are just fluff and have no substance that will actually help you to take action.
I've been in the marketing space for over 8 years, and I've either learned things by doing it myself, or by understanding how others have done it - not from the '9 ways to do XYZ' stuff that provide no value.
Yet you see all those marketing articles everywhere, while the marketing articles such as case studies and data-backed articles are getting lost in the stream of cloudy non-interesting content. So I collected dozens of marketing case studies and will send them weekly by email.
Personally, I’d rather spend 15 minutes reading a fantastic case study and getting 3-4 new ideas than spending 15 minutes reading 10 articles that have no substance at all. And I can’t be alone. So I’m scratching my own itch: I want to cut through the noise.
What I’ve done so far:
Collected a few dozen case studies that I enjoyed reading
Created a landing page at NoiseCutters.com
Reached out to the authors of case studies I am sharing to thank them for writing that piece and sharing their insights
Installed Google Analytics to track where sign-ups are coming from
Created a marketing strategy leveraging:
-- Facebook: post to Facebook groups within the marketing and startup niche to share this newsletter
-- Twitter: write launch tweets + update tweets
-- Quora: answer marketing questions weekly and link back to the sign-up page
-- LinkedIn: post updates to my LinkedIn profile
-- ProductHunt Launch: wait for a certain number of sign-ups before I promote it there to leverage social proof
-- Side Projects: create interesting marketing projects to promote the newsletter
-- Slack: Share it in the communities where I’m already active right now
-- Blogs: Write case studies about my own progress in order to attract more similar subscribers
Posted this new product to IndieHackers and added milestones
Submitted the newsletter to Inbox Stash (https://inboxstash.com - sort of a ProductHunt-like site to discover great newsletters)
The newsletter will be sent out weekly and will feature 3 handpicked case studies that provide step-by-step explanations and the results the marketers got from this marketing strategy.
Tomorrow I will be back with the results from the first day!
If you’re interested in receiving the great marketing case studies from around the web every week, feel free to sign up at https://noisecutters.com.
Always happy to answer questions if you have any.
Great idea. I signed up. I'd love to read updates about your own growth as well.
Looking forward to following this.
A lot of people want to start newsletters and have the skills to create great content BUT... they don’t know how to go out and find an audience. Can see this being a great case study.
And thanks for mentioning Inbox Stash - hope it gets more subscribers for you.
Thanks, Paul. This is gonna be good!
Really want to show people what it's like behind the scenes to grow a newsletter or any product at all. Marketing is usually the last priority for most people as you really just want to build your product, but it's essential. So breaking it down into actionable content will hopefully inspire others to get their products out there and grow.
Inbox Stash is great, really like it so far!
Love the depth you put into this. Long road ahead. Looking forward to tomorrow's update!
