Day 5: 0 paying users, but I think I finally know why
Quick update on the 50 users in 25 days sprint.
Numbers so far:
Signups: 0
Active users: 0
Paying users: 0
Channels tested: Reddit, IH, Product Hunt
The honest realisation from this thread's comments — I've had a traffic problem this whole time when actually it's an activation problem. People land, click around, and leave before hitting the moment where Helios becomes obviously useful.
So that's what I'm fixing this week. One metric: did they complete a real workflow in their first session. Not did they sign up. Not did they open the dashboard. Did they actually send something through Helios they would have sent through another tool before.
If that answer is yes even once, that's more valuable than 100 signups who bounce.
Also shifting Reddit strategy — complaint threads only, no launch posts. Finding people already trying to replace something rather than people who are just venting.
Day 10 update coming. If you've tried Helios and hit a wall somewhere in the first session, I genuinely want to know where.
I think the shift from tracking signups to tracking completed workflows is a strong one.
What stood out to me is the phrase "something they would have sent through another tool before."
That feels like a much more meaningful milestone than registration or dashboard visits because it signals a behavior change, not just curiosity.
A lot of products can generate clicks, signups, and even engagement from people exploring. The harder question is whether the user trusted the product enough to replace an existing habit, even once.
I would still be careful about concluding it is purely an activation problem with 0 signups so far. There could still be positioning or expectation gaps upstream.
But if someone completes a real workflow that they previously did elsewhere, that feels like one of the strongest early signals you can get.
Fair point on the positioning gap — that's probably the real thing to pressure test first. If someone completes a full workflow and still doesn't come back, that's a different problem than not activating at all. Trying to separate those two before drawing conclusions.
