December Startup - Am I the bad guy?

December Startup 🚀

My previous November Startup didn't have a marketing strategy, and I didn't want to make the same mistake for this startup. Since I am working on a new startup each month, I thought I could write articles detailing my journey and thus marketing the projects I am working on. What better place to start than Indie Hackers! 😊

The challenge with https://www.indiehackers.com/ lies in the requirement to comment on others' posts before gaining the ability to make your own posts. Early in the morning, I would browse through various articles, grasp the content, but often found myself without a meaningful comment to share (perhaps due to needing more caffeine). I would then send the article to ChatGPT and request it to craft a fitting comment. It took a few attempts to refine ChatGPT's responses and generate a concise comment with the desired emotional tone.

The challenge of fine-tuning ChatGPT for generating comments sparked an idea for a potential business venture to generate comments to posts with an integrated user experience. My objectives were as follows:

  • Publish an extension on the Chrome Web Store.
  • Enable users to pay for the services provided.
  • Attract a daily engagement from 10 distinct users.
  • Secure at least one paying subscriber.

Building Reply Gen

Once I have a draft of the business plan, I look into buying any necessary domains. Frustrated with the cumbersome experience of using Namecheap as mentioned in the November Startup, I decided to explore an alternative - https://www.cloudflare.com/products/registrar/. This time around, my experience was significantly smoother and I plan on using Cloudflare Registrar for the rest of my Startup projects.

The business development involved two parts:

An aspect of this business that might spark controversy is the approach I've taken with payments. Integrating payment support directly into a Chrome extension poses challenges. Given that Stripe rejected my November Startup, I was reluctant to revisit them. Instead, I opted to publish my API on RapidAPI. The RapidAPI marketplace has always intrigued me, despite some negative feedback regarding its maintenance. I saw it as a solution capable of handling API access, payments, and user accounts significantly simplifying the development requirements on my end.

The most significant drawback of this approach is the impact on user experience. Users are currently required to navigate to Reply Gen API, sign up for the API, and then manually input their API key into the extension—a process that is not well-documented on my end 😥. It would greatly enhance convenience if there were a streamlined method for users to manage these steps directly from within the extension.

The bulk of my efforts went into establishing a seamless integration with https://www.indiehackers.com/. I aimed for user-friendly options to generate a reply conveniently located next to the comment box. The interface I envisioned was both straightforward and customizable, allowing users to specify the number of sentences, desired moods, and reading level. Leveraging AI, the system reads the article content and generates a tailored reply based on these chosen settings.

Conclusion

I harbored concerns about the viability of this month's startup, questioning whether I could accomplish all tasks by month-end. December posed an additional challenge, given my commitment to spending weeks with family. I was able to have disciplined focus and launch Reply Gen and it works! I used it to create enough comments that I am now able to make posts on https://www.indiehackers.com/ 😅. Building a tool to subvert Indie Hacker's moderation policy may make me the bad guy?

That being said, I acknowledge this startup as a failure ❌, falling short of my objective to engage 10 distinct users and secure at least one paying subscriber.

From this startup experience, I've gained valuable insights:

  • Cloudflare offers an excellent user experience, and I plan to utilize it for managing my future domains. The platform proved particularly adept at setting up email domains and forwarding.

  • I now possess the know-how to construct a Chrome extension and navigate the intricacies of publishing one.

  • I've learned the process of posting an API on RapidAPI, fulfilling a longstanding curiosity.

  • Marketing remains a formidable challenge. In the future, I'll consider:

    • Developing a marketing strategy that commences earlier in the month, rather than toward the end.

    • Exploring the option of creating projects within existing marketplaces, such as app stores.

The schedule for December turned out to be quite demanding. Looking ahead, I have plans to broaden the capabilities of Reply Gen to include platforms like YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Reddit. If you're interested in seeing this expanded support, please let me know, and I'll make it a priority it.

I'm a little skeptical about the accuracy of the analysis, so it would be good to double-check with other sources.
