Deciding what to build based on customer feature requests.

Does your customers feature request confuse or guide you?

Feedback might be confusing at first glance, but here's what you need to do:

    • ask for more explanation. What do they mean by I want xyz? Why do they need it? How would they use it? What's the background behind the request?
    • ask what they're doing now to get around the lack of that feature. Does it sound really cumbersome? Is taking up valuable time?
    • ask how important that feature is (surprisingly, a lot of responses will be "it's no big deal")

Once you've gathered that information, you'll understand the request and more importantly the customer better.

Then comes the hard part: figuring out if the request and type of customer fit your product.

I think it depends how far along you are.. yc startup advice include ignore feature requests and stirring the conversation to the problem the user is trying to solve...
I think some thing are clearer to one side or the other... Maybe depending also on customer types 🤷
