Describe your mentor-mentee relationship?
by
FlyingDutchman
For how long?
Where did you find it?
Describe how he/she helps you?
I hired a coach for sales and marketing. It is 6 weeks long for the intensive then phone and email as needed. I found him at a business lunch where he was introducing his book. My mentor helps with staying focused on what matters and simplifying the sales and marketing aspects.
For example, I was building a brand name and corporate website. He said you are trying to re-create your old company without the funding and team. Get rid of that and use your own name and own experience. Plus the advice for 3 core blog posts and how to get people to ask you for what you offer. Really good stuff.
Outside of that, I tried some big-name mentors. A few CEO of local startups that went public and exited. They do not cost money. However, they only answer questions. My issue is that I do not always know the question to ask. I found them through a series of coffee meetings using Linkedin. You meet one person and they tell you to talk to someone else and with their introduction, really successful people will meet you.
I follow a lot of inspiring people on Twitter, I think that's close enough. I believe more in being part of a community where we help each other rather than in a master-apprentice kind of relationship.
