Good question, I think it really depends on what you're calling "design".
When you listen to Brian Chesky, AirBnb founder, he is talking about designing the service, culture & experience of the company.
Design meaning conception, it is in the very core of your startup.
If you're talking about aesthetic, you potential customers prefer good service than good aesthetic, yes.
Just my point of view!
