This is my first post in this IH. I have been reading tons of posts from many people and i have come to a conclusion.
Thanks to a podcast from Ladybug, I found this amazing community. I have realized my venture in game development to was a far massive fetched game idea as a beginning/learning game developer.
So I have decided to shrink down the idea from a MMORPG and wanting to finally have a game to match World of Warcraft (without all the bs from them) to a scaled down RPG. I talked with my partner and he agrees. This is all because of this community. Starting small then scaling into something bigger.
I will be posting progression and demos for feedback from anyone in this community since I know y'all will give honest feedback. Not just playing to play.
Do you think i made the right move?
Absolutely, this is the right choice! I would even suggest you do a short experiment if you can take one extra month.
Talk to you partner and come up with a game idea that you both believe you can finish and put to market in one month. No mater if you think it will suck, won't sell etc. It will give you such an important insight in how correct you are in your estimations of how long the projects take to make (way longer than you think) while also going through all the main stages of developing and launching a game.
Even though you might think you will loose one month this way, it will actually save you a ton of time and struggles with your next, larger adventures. And it will probably help you scale down your idea even more. ;)
We have both decided on a dungeon crawler ish style game, like the old PlayStation game "Dark Cloud." We both love that game and feel its need a new coat of paint with new theme and story with a few other things. So thats what we will be building.
However we both have kids and wives and work full time plus still learning. So no matter what it will take time. I am only able to work on it about 8-10 hours a week (for now) so that just tells you how long it will take.
I am wanting to launch it on console and PC so that will be a headache in general.
For it being a hobby project, having fun and not affecting your regular life to much is the real goal. :) Looking forward to your next update!
Thanks bud. I will be making a trailer and all that so I'll post the vid if im allowed too. Along with website once its made lol.
When we begin simple, we know what's missing. If we begin complex, figuring out what's not working from what's not needed becomes the basis for a modern mystery novel…
Definitely the right choice! I don’t know how experienced you are now, but it might be worth it to figure out the team aspect with a very small game.
When I started working with my partner we floundered around with pie in the sky ideas without really doing anything. Then we said we will make a small 1 week project (really 1 month part time). The goal was to figure out how we could work in a team. It let us create a way( mind you not the best way) to share code/art. We setup a discord for us to talk and most importantly we learned that it takes really frickin long for us to make even a small game because we are both noobs.
It was kind of demoralizing but it did two very important things. It forced us to create devops, and it showed we both really wanted to continue learning. So moving forward we would do just that, make small little games until making small little games becomes easy for us. That way we could take on medium sized games reusing some of what we have already learned. I don’t know if it will work out, but it feels better then before.
I would love to be taken under someones wing as far as the rest of game dev stuff (aside from the backend and graphics) since im really new too it.
I'm not very experienced so I am using Udemy and different tutorials and im basically making many small games for those. Im only working on the backend currently and then once the backend is optimized I will be working on graphics (which will be another learning progress). I am having tons of fun and the people I've talked to about it are already really excited.
