Did you know about the Jewellery industry's dirty secrets?

Have been reading/watching documentaries recently about the jewellery industry, all of which talk about the ongoing dirty nature of gold/silver mining and more obviously, continued purchase of blood diamonds. Did you know 90% of consumer bought gold in the world is helping enable money laundering!

I was shocked - particularly given the activism that challenges a lot of consumer facing industries! Clothes companies are having to become more sustainable as consumers' eyes are opened to the damage that is done, but it doesn't seem like the same challenges are facing the jewellery industry.

Would love to know if you knew about these issues, or whether like me you were naive to them? If people are interested, will happily summarise what I have been reading in a post or something :)
