Did you try to build an online directory?

Have you ever had the idea for an online directory? What have been your biggest challenges in building it or what stopped you from doing it?

I built Virtual Mojito to help people discover Zoom alternatives for events, remote work and communities. Built with Notion.

The biggest obstacle is to make sure content is updated.

Hive Index is my directory of online communities. I write a bit about the tech stack here. Overall has been a very rewarding experience and I've joined some really awesome communities and met amazing folks.

Biggest challenge that comes to mind is getting people to come back. I find that people usually visit once, find a few communities and go join them, but don't specifically come back much to find others. I'll be working on a few features that make the information available even more useful soon, which I'm hoping will increase the value + use of the platform.

      Thanks for your feedback!

Great directory! Very interesting tech stack. Especially the Gatsby-Algolia combination. I have to look into this.

I've had ideas but never tried because you need to drive LOTS of traffic to it to make it worthwhile. Unless you have a clever trick up your sleeve for generating traffic without paying for ads it's going to be tough.

Do you have a landing page up yet for your idea you're trying to validate? If not, can I suggest setting up a page on LandingPing?

I've built a few directories before. A couple even got links in the Open Directory Project a long time ago. However, they never got much traffic. They can get dated quickly as well if you don't keep updating the links.

A better way to do this is like @Janel 's NewsletterOS.com. Something focused on a trendy niche is a must better idea than a broad directory.
