The once-popular social news site is being relaunched by its original founder with help from former rival Alexis Ohanian.
Kevin Rose, the original founder of Digg, has reacquired his once-popular social news aggregation site for an undisclosed sum, with plans to rebuild it as a challenger to Reddit.
The twist? Rose is collaborating with Alexis Ohanian — Reddit's co-founder who once viewed Digg as "the enemy" when launching Reddit back in 2005.
The former rivals announced their plans through X posts (this one from Kevin Rose and this one from Alexis Ohanian), quickly drawing attention from the New York Times and CNET.
The confirmed launch date for the “new Digg” is March 8, 2025, and early access sign-ups are already open via reboot.digg.com.
In their announcement posts, Ohanian and Rose suggested the new platform would emphasize two elements that increasingly feel at odds: community-driven content and AI tooling:
According to CNET, AI will feature prominently in Digg’s relaunch.
That means algorithmic help for spotting trolls and spam, plus support for creators who want to share content without worrying about toxic debate.
Digg’s revival will be headed up by a relatively unknown CEO named Justin Mezzell. He's a designer with some C-level experience as the co-founder of PROOF Collective, a community of NFT enthusiasts.
A substantial portion of Digg's funding came from venture capital powerhouses True Ventures and SevenSevenSix — the latter founded by Ohanian himself.
For indie hackers, the opportunity here is straightforward: every new community platform represents a new distribution channel for expanding your reach.
If the new Digg gains traction, it could become a valuable channel for promoting your projects, your content, and your personal brand.
So stay tuned — March 8 is just around the corner.
great to see it coming back
Woo I loved Digg back in the day. Excited to see what they do with it, and how they embrace the era of intelligence.

Woohoo, waiting for the myspace comback as well!
I wonder if Moonbird holders or Oddities get any benefits or "special class" designation
"Exciting to see Digg making a comeback! If it can blend nostalgia with modern content discovery, it might just become a powerhouse again. 🚀🔥 What do you think—can it compete with today's giants?"
It was greed and voting system manipulation that destroyed Digg. Hope they find a way around that this time.
I wonder if Moonbird holders or Oddities get any benefits or "special class" designation on Digg? They were once worth $100k, now down to $1k -- yikes!
Kevin Rose and Alexis Ohanian still have significant social capital and influence in tech, so this should be interesting!
Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht recently relaunched the Diggnation podcast as well:

great perspective. It's going to be great to have an alternative to reddit since they seem to be gating everything now to protect their data now that AI has gained traction
"That means algorithmic help for spotting trolls and spam, plus support for creators who want to share content without worrying about toxic debate."
Is this something straight from the founders or inference from editor?
I'm curious as to their definition of "community moderation". That just sounds weird.
Public building builds trust and attracts users. Some share regularly, others occasionally. I’m more interested in growth strategies than just revenue. And yes, transparency influences my choices. How do you do it with
