DigitalOcean or other big players?

I'm just doing a quick research, so I really appreciate any input that you have.

  1. Are you using DigitalOcean or other cloud providers (AWS, AZURE and GCP)?
  2. Do you make decision between DigitalOcean and other cloud providers? like cost, uptime or services available?
  3. Do you plan to switch to DigitalOcean if you're using other providers?
  4. If you're using DigitalOcean, is there anything you don't like that may make you switch other others?

For all my projects I'm avoiding time-wasting so I just pick a user-friendly provider.
You can try Render even Indie Hackers is hosted with them.

Is it more for static site?

(Render founder) We support everything: backend APIs, full stack Rails, databases, and more. https://render.com/docs.

And distributed Elixir which works out of the box. Render is like if Heroku never stopped innovating, but way more affordable.

          1. 3

            Pricing is also an innovation!

Thank you for joining the discussion. I wonder if Render use the infrastructure of other companies or own its datacenter? I guess in the long run, the only way to maintain low price is to own the hardware.

We use large cloud providers and also run some of our workloads on bare metal. You are correct: in the long run we plan to utilize bare metal much more than we do now.

Render Developer Advocate here. I’m one month in at Render. Used to run Dev Advocacy at Heroku, but the Render folks won me over!

I am using digital ocean for most things. It provides me most things I need like virtual servers, databases, DNS, and s3 storage. I find it more user friendly in comparison to AWS and Azure.

The only thing I'm missing is a serverless platform like AWS Lambda or Azure Functions.

      1. 2

thanks for sharing. I guess serverless function on DO is quite new, let's see how developers think about it.

I use DigitalOcean for almost everything. The only AWS serviceI use is SES for email handling of accounts that are hosted on DigitalOcean servers.

    1. 2

Yes, I think DO is reasonable to start and can accommodate any growth

I am using both AWS and DO since 2014. But if you ask me to choose one, I'd pick DigitalOcean for small to medium size apps.

For large-scale apps, AWS/GCP/Azure is the best choice.

Both DO and AWS pricing are almost the same. AWS Lightsail offers virtual private servers for a low, predictable price similar to DigitalOcean.

    1. 1

that's interesting. I always think DO is cheaper than AWS :))

I use Digital Ocean (managed Kubernetes) and Hetzner (dedicated server). I'm generally very happy with both. I do suspect I'll move over to Google Cloud or AWS as my budget grows. I stay away from them due to unpredictable network usage costs.

    1. 1

interesting, may I ask why you think you cannot scale with DO?

      1. 2

Didn't mean to imply I couldn't scale with DO. I just like the power and flexibility available at GCP/AWS.

I am using Vultr (used DigitalOcean, but I prefer the simplicity of Vultr), and to be fair DO (or Vultr) is incomparable to Amazon/Google/Azure.
It's completely different (usage, offer, and simplicity-wise) and it's really difficult to let the costs spin out of control.

    1. 1

yeah, it depends on what you need from these providers. It it's just about VM and managed database, I think DO is very much comparable to bigger providers. Don't you think so?

      1. 1

Because of the complexity (and extremely bad UI/UX/Support), they are incomparable for me. But in the end, a server is a server. Whatever you call it.

  7. 1

Using Hetzner for VM's but also using a suit of free stack on Azure like functions, service bus and cosmos db. I'm amazed what you can build using their free services.

    1. 1

Do you think that DO is affordable in the long run. I guess when you need to scale big cloud providers like Azure are expensive

  8. 1

DIgital Ocean now, but Vultr and Hetzner would be good choices as well. I wouldn't choose a big cloud for my projects unless I want to utilize a specific service that's not offered somewhere else.

I also use Digital Ocean and Vultr as examples in my book as I think they are great for starting out.

    1. 1

I wonder if DO is the only small cloud company that actually owns data centres around the world?

  9. 1

I used dreamhost, GCP and DigitalOcean depending on when things were initially made, I don't generally move them once working unless forced (RIP Parse).

    1. 1

I wonder what is it from Dreamhost and GCP that you need but DO doesn't offer?

      1. 1

GCP is Firebase and 'Cloud Run'
Dreamhost i used before DO existed, I still use the occasional free MySQL database.

  10. 1

I've moved everything from DO and Linode to Vultr. Had rock solid availability and performance for years now.

I consider all of these VPS providers to be largely the same. Choose what works best as far as interfaces. Vastly different price point and product portfolio than the public cloud providers. In my use cases I don't get value from what the cloud providers offer.

    1. 1

Do you think DO is the most affordable? I guess Linode is more for serverless, in that case, DO may not be what you want.
