Dispelling SaaS urban myths

1. Build it fast and scale later they said.

It's true that many startup founders with CS degrees tend to over optimize, but scaling should be a concern from day one.

A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step but you should still have the forethought to pack sandals.

2. The technology you choose doesn't matter.

Just like the foundation of a house doesn't matter. This doesn't mean that one tech stack is superior to the others but this should still be something to ponder well before you start building.

Tech debt exists and only gets more painful with time.

3. You can build it all with no code

You can build many things with common tools and ingenuity but your product isn't going to be like everyone else's.

No code tools solve common problems that are often easy to code yourself or add standard features which won't let you stand out.

You might be able to get 80% of the way with no code but that last 20% will most likely involve custom code.

4. It has to grow quickly

Any idea when executed correctly can make money. After all there is a market for bottled water...

I used to think this meant I had to execute correctly from the beginning but most growth is slow and painful. Take time, experiment and enjoy the process.

5. The launch is everything

Most launches fail or don't meet our expectations. The launch is just the first step in that thousand mile journey.

It's ok to push your launch back if you're stressed or don't feel ready just don't put pressure on it defining your success.
