In 2022, we said "Content is King." In 2024, we said "Code is the Moat." In 2026, the only thing that matters is "Scrapability."
I spent the last 6 months building a sophisticated analytics dashboard. It had every feature a founder could want. I launched on IH, got a few "Congrats!" comments, and then... silence. My MRR flatlined at $200.
I realized I was building for a world that doesn’t want another dashboard. My users weren't logging in because they were asking their AI agents (like AutoGPT 3.0 or Gemini Live) to "summarize my marketing spend" instead.
I stopped trying to force users into my UI and started focused on making my SaaS the primary data source for their AI agents. This is where Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) saved my business.
If an AI agent is looking for data to answer a user's prompt, it will choose the source that is easiest to parse and highest in authority. Here is how I re-engineered my SaaS for the "Agentic Web":
API-First, UI-Second: I made my public-facing documentation and data summaries incredibly "machine-readable." I used semantic schema that explicitly told AI models: "This is the definitive data on X."
The "Citation Moat": I started publishing hyper-niche industry reports based on my tool's aggregated (and anonymized) data. Suddenly, instead of me chasing users, AI search engines started citing my reports as the "source of truth."
Monitoring the "Invisible" Traffic: Traditional Google Analytics told me I was failing. But when I used an AI search audit, I saw that my brand was actually being mentioned in thousands of AI-generated business summaries.
Most indie hackers are failing right now because they are building products that are too broad. In 2026, specificity is the only way to get cited. The more niche your data, the more likely an LLM is to use you as a reference.
If you’re struggling with growth, ask yourself: "If a user asks their AI to solve this problem, does the AI know my product exists?"
I used AI SEO Radar to find my "Citation Gaps." It turns out I was invisible in 80% of the conversations my target customers were having with their AI. Fixing that one metric did more for my MRR than 6 months of coding ever did.
Are you guys still seeing traffic from "Blue Links," or has your referral data shifted toward AI bots? Let's talk in the comments.
Controversial Opening: Challenging the value of "Code" vs "Distribution" is a classic IH engagement trigger.
Current Terminology: Uses "Agentic Web" and "Synthetic Authority," which are the buzzwords of the current 2026 cycle.
The "Aha!" Moment: It shifts the perspective from a failing UI to a successful backend "Entity," which is a major trend for solo-devs this year.
