Do I need blog articles on my website for content marketing when I'm working to make it a social media/community site?

The MVP for my skin care webapp had a moderate initial traction.
The features are minimal so the user retention is low and user acquisition is not great either.
I've tried some marketing channels and I think content marketing and SEO, combined with email marketing will be the most effective channel.

I'm a little overwhelmed by the work required, but I think I need to make my website into a community/social media site similar to Indiehackers, r/SkincareAddiction on Reddit, or Sephora community.

Here's my conundrum:
For content marketing, I'm thinking about writing and publishing medium~high quality blog articles once a month or so. This is going to take a lot of time and money from me since I will need to hire a good skin care content writer to brainstorm and proofread my articles, on top of the engineering work to set up blogs on my website.

However, as I said, I'm going to build social media features, and hopefully a lot of skin care enthusiasts will post on my website and user-generated contents will become the main component of the content marketing and SEO for my website.

I'm not sure whether I should just focus on building the social media features, or build social media while also writing blog articles.

I have a lot of other features to build, and my time estimate for building the social media features alone is 3~4 months. With other features, it'll be 6~7 months.
If I build those other features and social media features + write blog articles, it's going to take 9~10 months and more money.

Few pros of writing blog articles:

  1. Once I build the blog infrastructure, it can be used as the basis for the social media.
  2. If I write blog posts that resemble a high-quality example of the posts I want users to write in my social media, that can set the standards and the tone for user-created articles.
  3. Obviously, the posts will help me bring in some traffic
  4. SEO is a long-term commitment and starting earlier will give me more advantage

Few cons of writing blog articles:

  1. The amount of effort I need to invest (9+ more months) is overwhelming.
  2. Content writing is not my strong suit, especially for skin care, and it's difficult to produce high quality articles. I'm also not sure how high quality I should aim for.
  3. Money. I can't afford to hire anyone, so I'll have to find a good content writer to brainstorm & review my work. That must be hard and still expensive.
  4. I'm not sure how/where to display those high quality articles together with user created articles. On a separate page? That's distracting and jarring. As a social media post? It's going to get buried with other user-created posts, and making the effort not worth it. As a social media post and pin it? That's jarring too. This is a rather minor design problem though.

Hei @Eric. I think concerning the code you should do as least as possible for your mvp. For exemple, you may build a social media platform and no-one used it. And also it seems like you are not a skincare professional. I think it could be a great idea to have someone in the domain as cofounder. For the blog even with WordPress you can do something really quickly. You will make it better as long as the platform evolve and you get users feedback

Why do you need to "build the blog infrastructure", you're just getting started don't overengineer everything!
Use any blog platform like Wordpress, Ghost or a GoHugo and start from that.

Then, recycle ALL your posts into social media post (twitter threads, linkedin articles…). Again, don't overthink it. Try to be consistent, not perfect!
