I’m researching a possible product idea around lead follow-up for small businesses.
The situation I’m looking at is this: inquiries come from email, website forms, phone calls, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other places, but small teams may not have one clear system for tracking them.
I’m trying to understand:
Do businesses actually lose leads because messages are spread across different apps?
Are they manually copying leads into a CRM or spreadsheet?
Is the bigger problem missed messages, slow replies, duplicate follow-ups, or something else?
Are existing CRMs already good enough for this?
I’m not building anything yet. I’m trying to find out whether this is a painful problem or just a minor inconvenience.
Would love to hear from anyone who has worked with small service businesses or dealt with this directly.
The businesses I worked with were mostly home service contractors. Plumbers, electricians, painters. Plus a few accountants and consultants. Almost all tracked leads through personal phone voicemails, Facebook message threads, and paper notes. A couple had CRMs but nobody logged in because data entry felt like unpaid work. The ones who converted best just picked one channel and got fast on it. What vertical are you leaning toward first?
I worked with a few local service businesses on this. The answer is yes, they lose leads, but not always in the way you would expect. Most owners can tell you roughly how many leads come in, but they cannot tell you which channel converts best because replies are scattered across personal phones, Facebook DMs, and a dusty CRM nobody logs into. The real pain is not missing messages. It is not knowing which channel to double down on. Are you thinking of building for a specific type of business first?
That’s interesting. I was focused mostly on missed messages and slow replies, but not knowing which channel actually brings paying customers could be a bigger problem. What kind of local service businesses did you work with, and how were they tracking leads at the time?
