Do we overestimate what Product Hunt actually validates?

Product Hunt has become the default answer to “how do I validate my idea?”

But I’m starting to wonder what it really validates.

From what I’ve seen (both launching and watching others):

  • It’s very good at rewarding novelty, polish, and timing

  • It’s less good at surfacing long-term demand

  • And it often favors products that are easy to react to, not necessarily easy to adopt

A lot of founders walk away from PH with one of two outcomes:

  1. Short-term hype that doesn’t translate into sustained usage

  2. A quiet launch that feels like rejection, even when the problem is real

The confusing part is that both outcomes can send the wrong signal.

A low-performing PH launch doesn’t mean the idea is bad.

And a high-performing one doesn’t mean the market is real.

It makes me think PH validates something closer to:

  • “Can this be understood and reacted to in 30 seconds?”

    rather than

  • “Is this a pain someone feels weekly or daily?”

I’m curious how others here think about it.

If you’ve launched on Product Hunt:

  • What did it actually tell you?

  • Did it change what you built next?

  • Or did the real signal come later, somewhere else?

Genuinely interested in how people interpret PH’s role now — as a launchpad, a signal, or just a moment.
