Do you automatically add new app users to email list?

I have a newer saas product that I will be continually updating with new tools and features. I want to make sure that in addition to transactional emails (ex: password reset), the users know if a feature is changing, new tool is added, etc. Especially right now in the early stage when users aren't going into the app regularly.

I know you are not supposed to automatically add users to a list without their consent. And if you do your unsubscribe rates will likely increase.

I currently have a checkbox on the signup form enticing them to sign up for my weekly trends email, but only a percentage opt in and I am missing the ability to tell the other users when a new product feature is launched.

How do you handle opting in users to receive product updates?

I automatically add them but send 1 email a week and include unsubscribe link at the bottom. open rate has been okay and haven't gotten any unsubscribers so far.

I think it depends a lot on the product and the nature of the emails. In my case, we have a small user base (277 users) and most of them are either people from my personal audience or my team member's (who has a twitter audience), so we felt that our connection with the users and the earlier messaging justified us sending updates.

but I try to add as much value as we can in the emails so we won't abuse users' attention.

in my case, I write the emails and end them with my name and that probably helps a bit too (users getting an email from the CEO, as opposed to a colorful marketing email). what do you think?
