Do you believe that certificates increase participation in courses?

There are certain studies that suggest this to be true? What are your experiences? Do you give out certificates at the completion and how do you do it?

I think it depends on the reason the user is buying the course.
If they're hoping to up skill and boost their CV then a certificate will definitely be a bonus.
All the courses we've produced in the past have been exam revision/interview preparation courses where we haven't offered certificates. We didn't think they'd be of benefit to the users as the certificate they were really after was for passing the exam they were taking.
