Do you compare yourself to the "competition"?

When I introduce PodQueue to people, I sometimes get asked: "isn't that like [competitor]?"

The answer is usually that PodQueue would be like them if it did only a fraction of what it does, because PodQueue's greatest unique feature is its automatic extraction of audio links from web links. This means that it takes mere seconds to save a link for later with PodQueue, versus an involved process of sometimes extremely technical work to manually add an audio link with other services.

To make this easier to compare and more obvious for potential customers (who may also be searching the web for "PodQueue vs. [competitor]"), I've added comparison pages for the major competitors that are out there: https://podqueue.fm/pages/competition

Do you compare yourself to the "competition"? If so, drop a link to show off! If not, why not?

I’ve played with the idea but have decided not to.

I need to focus on what I’m doing instead of what the competition does. I’ve gone the other route for a while and it really distracted me and stressed me out.

I see the upsides for SEO but I fear it might make things too competitive. Also most of my competition is open source and I don’t feel like it’s a fair comparison and would leave a sour taste in the mouth of fellow developers.

Instead I’ve reached out to developers of open source alternatives offering affiliate partnerships. This has worked out quite well. I indirectly finance open source and developers that need more features find their way to me. Win win.

I actually LOVE getting asked, “isn’t that like [competitor]?” I’ve even seen
successful companies pitch like “we’re like blank + blank.” While that person is
trying to compartmentalize your service, it’s the perfect time to hit them with what
makes you better. They’re literally asking for it.

Just respond with, “Yes, but we also do...” with your point of differentiation, and
they’ll understand your service 10X faster. Do make sure you know what makes
    you unique.

A real example from our experience with a number of investors on getwellpaid.com:

Me: “I’m building a service to manage and share subscriptions or bills.”

Investor: “Wait, like Splitwise or Truebill?”

Me: “Exactly, we’re like Splitwise mixed with Truebill, but we have automated bank
transfers.” (or you can always reframe it back to what the customer is missing
    today)

Never. I just do some research to see what I can do better or different
