Assuming you are a specialist (developer, marketer, scientist, doctor, engineer, lawyer, etc.) when you're bootstrapping a new business, do you tend to consult other companies to keep the bills paid?
Yes I do, and I love it. Doing 50-50 on my time allows me to not be worried about finances, but also have plenty of time & energy for my own products.
I wrote about it a bit in this IH AMA post
Actually, yes. Just remember that consulting is it's own business.
I wrote a piece a week ago on it:

I used to see consulting as just something to keep me afloat while I work on my SaaS/other products to grow in revenue. I've recently come around to accepting it as part of my overall portfolio of businesses/products, which includes a mix of consulting, info products and SaaS.
More diversified, less risk of all eggs in one basket, more resilient to market shocks. It also suits my curious, generalist personality more.
I'm definitely inspired by the success that Designjoy has had. I'd focus on offering dev services instead of design though. Ideally I'd be able to do ~20 hours of freelance a week to help support my SaaS.
