Do you drink and code?

Not like drink at work, but after work.

I do that. After work I come home, relax and start coding my own projects. But while coding I open a bottle of expensive drink and I sip, little by little, usually I get buzzed. So the day after I need to revisit my code to see what I've done xD

How about you?

      Having tried it, I concur.

I got so many of these xD

Alcohol is for celebrations for a reason.

It is scientifically proven to inhibit higher order functioning (obviously depending on the amount)

I can't see it as being of any benefit besides improving mood.

Do you code worse when you are unhappy? Maybe this would be good for you, otherwise, don't interfere with your brains higher order functioning while doing complex tasks.

When you reach a certain age and have kids ans family, you can't really do it without facing consequences the next day

    1. 1

      Like what consequences ?

It's apparently beneficial. I do find that a small whisky is fun to code with as I find that it makes me more creative. Code drunk, test sober.

      BDD. Booze driven development

Well, the ballmer study is 10 years old and outdated.
Any amount of alcohol is not good.

"Jan. 25, 2022 -- The widely held notion that consuming small to moderate amounts of alcohol is good for cardiovascular health is not supported by the data, the World Heart Federation (WHF) says in a new policy brief."

Your links are about health, not coding ability.

    3. 1

      Totally my mindset

  5. 2

    I drink and code.

Why? Because I'm a human being with a brain, and sometimes I just need a little liquid courage to get through the day.

I don't think it has to be a big deal. If you're working on something that's important for your job or for your life, but you just can't seem to get it done without some help from the bottle, I say go for it! Just don't forget that there's always time for another drink tomorrow morning.

    1. 1

There is always 5pm somewhere :D

  6. 2

I'm a big fan of drinking and coding.

I love the way that alcohol can help me lower my inhibitions and make me feel more comfortable with my coworkers. It also helps me forget that my boss is watching me work all day, and it helps me get through difficult tasks with ease. My code is always more readable when I've been drinking.

I think it's important to remember, though, that all drinking does not result in great code. If you're going to drink, you need to be sure to have a designated driver or take public transportation home—you don't want your code to be sloppy because you were too drunk!

  7. 2

One drink is ok, but more than that is going to impact the coding productivity.

    1. 1

Completely agree and tested on my own coding skills. 1 beer it's enough, 2 it's too much.

  8. 2

My best code is written when I'm drunk )))

    1. 1

That's what I like to hear

  9. 2

I take the laptop to the bar.

Joking, but sure, I can program buzzed. Normally happens on transatlantic flights when I'm drinking, coding and rocking away to good music on noise- canceling headphones. I probably look crazy but I like it.

    1. 1

      You see, it's good :D

  10. 1

    Short answer is: No :)

I believe in a sober lifestyle and the long term benefits coming from not drinking alcohol.

Yes in short term, it can "ease" the mind or maybe make you feel relaxed, or more creative, but the long term negative impact is really detrimental to the mind and body.

Scientist have been saying so for years, but its just recently getting a bit more into public

"According to a recent study by a group of scientists at Oxford University in England, there’s no safe dose for alcohol consumption. " - Healthline

"Alcohol consumption is a causal factor in more than 200 diseases, injuries and other health conditions. Drinking alcohol is associated with a risk of developing health problems such as mental and behavioural disorders, including alcohol dependence, and major noncommunicable diseases such as liver cirrhosis, some cancers and cardiovascular diseases." - WHO

I could write one, while being drunk

No, but sometimes I do Coke while coding

I'll remain old school; Don't drink, ever, under any circumstances. It takes a toll on your body and can manifest in anxiety.

  13. 1

I've never coded while drunk or buzzed. Interesting though, I feel like I might get more done.

  14. 1

haha, I sometimes drink a beer while working on the WBE Space but never get too hammered... XD

  15. 1

I love to code, but I don't drink while I do it.

I mean, I'm not against drinking and coding (in fact, I think it's a great way to get the creative juices flowing). But I've found that when I try to do it, my brain gets so focused on how much fun it could be that I forget what it is that I'm trying to do.

If you're looking for a new way to make your coding sessions more productive, try setting a timer for 30 minutes and giving yourself one beer (or glass of wine) every time that timer goes off. You'll be surprised at how much more quickly you'll get things done when you have an incentive!

    1. 1

That is also a good idea

  16. 1

I sure do. In fact, I'm drinking a glass of wine right now while I write this comment.

The question is: why? Why would anyone want to drink while they're writing code? You might think it's because they're trying to get drunk, but that's not it at all!

It turns out that drinking while writing code helps you solve problems faster. This is called "Alcohol Consumption and Problem Solving Ability" or ACPA for short (and yes, it's an actual thing).

  17. 1

    I don't drink. I code.

  18. 1

In the last months, never. It strongly depends on the mood and the "part of code" I'm working on. Some "pair programming" with a glass of Laphroaig without rocks can really spice up the creativity. Especially when you want to test you page and try to break stuff before customers do that. Actually developing a feature or bugfix? Most of the time a big no-no with alcohol.

  19. 1

Absolutely. One time I solved this problem I had been working on all day, later that night I had a Margherita and solved it in 15 minutes.

    1. 1

Shit, that's what I like to hear

  20. 1

In my younger days, I´m 46 now, I used to drink a lot and it didn´t bring me anywhere. My life is definitely better without booze and running my small business causes me enough headaches.

  21. 1

For the record, a drink can help for business-related tasks like marketing too. Just sayin...

  22. 1

Mostly I think this is just our mind telling us to "get lit" because dopamine.

The advantage is small when compared to the cost but I get the appeal.

I prefer water, coffee, vitamin b-complex, tunes and the bright early morning sun.

  23. 1

for coding no. alcohol doesnt seem to make me a better coder (or so i think).

on the other hand, i did have a glass of red wine once to unblock me with designing a landing page. had a major spike in creativity from that. still happy with the result afterwards.

    1. 1

      You see, it's working

  24. 1

Yes, after 8pm a glass of bourbon is really nice.

  25. 1

No. It slows me down. I like to use my code rather than actually code it. I will get drunk and use it.

  26. 1

    Wooow I’m not alone

  27. 1

I've tried drunk coding, micro dosing on acid, while high on other substances...but the best way I've ever coded.......is straight edge (the boring but my true story answer.)

  28. 1

I absolutely would if I could but my attention span hits zero after half a sip

  29. 1

If you're in a WeWork it's could be tempting due to the free beer taps... I don't find it productive, I do find it inspiring, when you need to think of new ideas...

Cheers! L'haim! Salute! (What's the programmer's equivalent word?)

  30. 1

I mean I have done it (including fixing a company emergency), but it's not something I enjoy. I don't have some good flow. So rather I watch a TV show with my drink ;)

  31. 1

I sometimes drink a beer after work and than I code in the evening. Not that I code shit after one beer, but I get tired...

  32. 1

i use to drink soda but not anymore. just water and tea

  33. 1

Nah, if I drink I can't code. Or, I can, but that is not a good code :)

Better not to mix the two.

    1. 1

I used to code like crazy drunk, not so much lately

The general perception and awareness of alcohol addiction symptoms are frighteningly low, especially among younger developers below 30s. Posts like this make me sad. The urge to consume a substance in order to relax is telling you that something is already very wrong and needs to be addressed differently.

    Please, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bASaIJMxMqI

    1. 1

Who said anything about an "urge"? Not to downplay the seriousness of alcohol addiction, but I don't think this post glorifies the use of alcohol.

      1. 2

        Yeah, just a question
