Do you guys also struggle finding time to read 1-2 pages of a book everyday?

Hi all,

As a result of COVID, working all the time from home, in combination with lockdowns and having the kids running around all the time , the line between work and non-work life has become blurred for me and I find it extremely difficult to find a few moments to read 1-2 pages of a book.

I am wondering how do you find/deal with this?

Audiobooks while cooking and cleaning has been a game changer for me. It doesn't work as well for non fiction because I can't make tons of notes although I still like it, but for fiction it is just perfect. I am close to finishing my 6th book this year. 1 on my phone, 2 on Kindle, and 3 on audible.

My problem is what do I read first. I try to follow a routine: every morning before work I try to cover the newsletters. Before bed I try to read a book. I don't set myself a target but I think I squeeze in a couple of pages.

I struggle with this every now and then, but I found that if I forced myself to read 1 page, I could probably finish the chapter.

Also, I stopped making reading into a chore, when I don't want to read, I don't. But I find other ways to continue to learn through podcasts, audible books, youtube videos and eventually I'll come back to read another book when I'm actually excited to.

Yeah, this "making things not into a chore" is something that keeps coming back to me, thanks for the reminder!

I have definitely been struggling with this.

I also struggle with my general routine – especially getting to bed on time and waking up early.

A “trick” I am trying to use right now is to get to bed by 10pm, and reward myself with reading time between 10 and 11 (when I should fall asleep)

So rather than treating the reading time as a task, it’s a “treat” in my mind to reward myself for another task.

Not sure if that helps but it has been for me so far. Also helps to be reading a book you enjoy!

Good one, gonna give your "trick" a try, never looked at it that way actually!

What about 1-2 screens every day?

In 2010 I switched to reading only ebooks, I no longer read printed works. I've been able to read dozens of works per year since then.

I use my phone or tablet as an ereader. It's easy to find free moments of just a handful of minutes, grab my phone, and read a few screens.

Yeah makes sense, have an iPad and a Kobo eReader but nothing beats the paper, but yeah I think I need to start loving the screens. Maybe toilet time :D

When my eyesight began aging, and reading paper was no longer comfortable, it was very easy for me to fall in love with screens.

I have had similar challenges and pretty much switched to Kindle app on my phone. I read a book instead of my usual social media scrolling. It's the only way I get any reading done.

I am also aiming for this, Thanks!

My morning routine consists of glass of water, stretch and read for 30 minutes before I leave the bedroom. My phone stays in the living room when I go to bed. So I have no choice but to read before falling asleep (no tv in the bedroom).

I also read somewhere years ago that psychologists suggest to their insomnia patients to only go to bed when you are tired so I have the book sit in a chair in the bedroom.

I use Audible and listen to them as I exercise or chores. Works about pretty well so far.

I read for about 20-30 minutes before I go to bed. Helps me wind down. Kids are already asleep by then.
