Do you guys still use Facebook?

I rarely visit Facebook , and I see my friends also don't use it as much anymore. What will happen to FB in the future? Is there an opportunity in this change?

  1. 5

I only reluctantly use it for some groups.

Wish people would stop creating groups there!

    1. 1

Agreed on this, my Facebook is for groups only and I also wish it stopped. However, after some time you will quickly see the difference in their quality, so I am not part of that many anymore.

The only other functional aspect of Facebook is messenger. (if your friends use it)

    2. 1

Yeah it’s probably the greatest moat Facebook has built up!

    3. 1

Thank you for your reply Rosie. What is your current favorite platform to replace Facebook groups?

  2. 3

I've heard from friends that their siblings (entered University this year) don't even have Facebook accounts. The newer generation never signed up for one and use Instagram / TikTok directly - food for thought.

    1. 1

Agreed! I see same pattern. For students seems to use Instagram and TikTok only. Facebook is branded as 'Social Network for old people'. 30+ is considered 'old'.

  3. 3

No, i want to get rid of whatsapp..but then they probably will buy whatever the alternative is and ruin that too

  4. 2

Yes, I use Facebook because I like the way we can share content in better way as compared to Instagram. Also I'm there for tech related groups and memes.
There is misunderstanding that Facebook is dying but reality is it's still growing, only it's userbase is changing. Just be on Fb for a week and you will realise how big is its reach.
Even if it is going to die then it will atleast take 5 to 10 years.

  5. 2

    Deleted 2017, happy since!

  6. 2

Facebook is a deal breaker for me, so I deleted my account last year. As a Google enthusiast I'm not against Big Tech, but Facebook crossed every possible line of decency.

As a creator I'm missing out on major engagement, promotion, and lead generation opportunities but I simply can't stand the platform.

  7. 2

Like it or not, Facebook is still a really good place to find groups where you can engage with potential customers. Personally I think it's a garbage fire that hurts rather than helps our society and world.

  8. 2

No, I avoid at all costs. Instagram, FB and all that "social" sites are such a WASTE of time. Zero value. The only thing you can do is waste your time and get addicted to it.

No wonder why a lot of millionares don't use this thing worse than tobacco.

    1. 1

Can you provide a source to back up your point "millionaires don't use [social sites]?"

I'm curious where you read that millionaires don't use them.

  9. 2

Maybe it's different in every country.

Most of my friends still use it. I use FB to talk with friends, like their posts

  10. 2

I refuse. I haven't used it in a very long time now.

    1. 1

I see the same happening to more and more people.

  11. 2

Yes, I use Facebook and Instagram almost daily. It is my primary method of keeping in touch with friends and family.

It is also my primary way to consume political and technology related news.

I check Facebook and Instagram at least 15 times a day.

    1. 1

Thank you for your reply Meera! Are you active in any FB groups also? It seems that is one of features that is still growing.

I like Instagram and use it sometimes.

One more thing - 99% of my Facebook friends and followers share my political views. That means I am part of "digital echo chamber" and also (possibly fake) "news propagator".

The IndieHacker community is too focused on SaaS based development or newsletter focused offers.

The point of the post is to say to the IndieHacker community --- "such communities exist!"

I have an "older" audience" (35 up) for my products (selling food such as chocolates and cookies from Switzerland) and they are still very engaged on Facebook. Our Facebook Page has a bit less than 8k fans/followers and they like and reply regularly to our posts. Therefore, it could be that you can still find a relevant audience on Facebook. However, depending on the required audience for your products, you can have more success on Reddit, Instagram or Twitter.

  13. 1

Yes, only for expats groups, selling groups and the marketplace.

  14. 1

I don't see the moral virtue deleting your accounts at all. Facebook is still the only place to connect people globally as I've come to know so many through traveling. I am also still very happy to see life event update from a distant fam/friends. (And their algorithm is still good at making sure you see those posts however old)

I think it's more like people are expanding their social options (heard somewhere young people today have 8 accounts) than replacing Facebook.

  15. 1

I haven't used facebook since probably ~2013/14. Never liked the UI and feature bloat. It sucks now as a creator, because I don't like the product at all. But I know that there's so much attention there that it's hard to not build for it. Same goes for Apple. I don't like the "walled garden" but they make up 50% of the mobile market.

  16. 1

Still have account there but I do not visit it at all. When it comes to groups most of them are full of spam so I do not visit them either.

  17. 1

Yes, I check it once a week on my Desktop (no mobile app)

  18. 1

Mainly just messenger. I rarely access facebook.com anymore to scroll through posts.

  19. 1

I just use facebook for my pages..

  20. 1

I don't use it anymore for friends updates, but I use it daily for groups. Unfortunately many groups are only available and active on Facebook.

  21. 1

    yes i use facebook
all my friends is gone now

  22. 1

I like to take regular social media breaks. My current FB break has lasted about two years, but I'll be back to tell my 500+ FB friends I'm still alive, eventually.

  23. 1

Reluctantly since I manage a few groups. Main one is my Medium writing group, Medium Writing. I tried to move the group to Slack but Facebook seems to be a necessary evil in communicating with writers (especially if they are not tech savvy).

    1. 1

Casey, I have a question for you, if you don't mind. Do you think out of 5.5k members some will actually pay you to be on the group? A bit like Substack if you will.

      1. 1

I’m sure some would (and perhaps some would like a small targeted group where we focus on boosting each other’s articles). But I really try to lead with free content and services so I would only do so if Facebook started charging me (and even then I’d likely eat the cost since rival groups would likely pass on the cost to members and this would further help differentiate my group).

But yes, some would. In fact many of my paid subscribers are in my group. It’s hard to tell based on Substack’s limited data analytics but I definitely get signups from that group. The exact number is hard to say since people in my group have almost certainly also interacted with my content in other ways.

One thing is for sure, the group would have never grown that big that fast if I tried to charge them.

        1. 1

Thank you for your insight. We are readying a platform that lets people create a paid community with a clean simple format and receive a monthly payment of their members directly into their Paypal. We don't take a cut, instead will just charge a fixed monthly fee for hosting the group. Would you be interested in participating in an early program?

          1. 1

            Sure sounds interesting!

            1. 1

sent you a DM on Twitter with some more info.

  24. 1

I think there are better problems for you to tackle. Certainly, many that will generate revenue in a clear way, and soon. But to answer the question: I never signed up! However, some friends made an account for me one day and started trolling etc, so I had to “take over” it haha. But I’ve never used it for myself.

  25. 1

Haven't used it happily for years, only use it when I must. To be honest, I get annoyed when a platform/community requires me to use it.

  26. 1

I haven't been using it for a few years now. I just came back to Bulgaria, where I am from originally, and it seems that here Facebook is THE PLACE for organizing events and groups - but not much more than that.
