I'm wondering how people approach the problem of motivating yourself to do sales? Is this a problem? Do you listen to certain things? Do you read certain books? #growth
For the record, I don't know anyone who enjoys doing cold calls.
@gilgildner makes some excellent points.
Something I'd add is that sales (especially in the early days) is all about momentum.
Once you get the ball rolling and start booking demos/making sales, it becomes a lot more fun.
I would echo the point about momentum! Someone once told me "action begets action" and it's the truest thing I've ever heard. Sometimes just doing stuff - doesn't matter what - catalyzes action to happen around you.
Most people hate cold calls because they are not mad enough to take the money
How do you solve the problem of getting momentum and keeping the momentum going?
A few different ways. It depends what your main challenge is.
To get momentum going, you just need to understand the basics of sales...
In the beginning, you'll have to reach out to more people than you expect, and follow up more often than you'd like.
It's basically just about letting your customers teach you how to sell to them (by listening), and putting in the hard work.
Once you have momentum, it depends on what is causing you to lose momentum.
Don't be inconsistent for example. Have a daily or weekly breakdown of sales goals you need to hit (eg number of leads found, number of emails sent etc).
Something that has been really useful for the participants in my Sales for Founders course has been having a close-knit accountability group to motivate each other and hold each other accountable.
Just the other day, one of the founders in the group said...
and, when asked why by another participant, replied...
So, in short, if you do the work, you'll see results, which will motivate you to want to do more of the work!
If you have any questions about sales, feel free to shoot me an email and I'll do my best :)
Oh, yes. I hate cold calls. Yet sales is my entire role at Discosloth.
I realized I was never going to be good at calling someone out of the blue and pitching our services. But I do like people, and I like communicating. So I decided I would only do warm calls and emails.
Almost three years later and we’ve got 20+ ongoing retainers, and have done projects for 120+ different companies. All from branding and writing, really.
No amount of books or extroverted business coach podcasts are going to change your personality. So change your business to fit what you like. If you dread cold calling, find a method you do enjoy. You will be better at something you enjoy.
