I am in the process of building my own journal app, with the focus on free-form tagging and generation of end-of-year tables. But it isn't ready yet.

What is ready as a beta is the second, bit more unusual, journaling I do which is a daily photo journal. Been taking one photo a day since 2013. I find it a great way to visually trigger my memory of what I've done. My written journal is mostly for reference, but I rarely read it. My visual journal, on the other hand, is something I often flick through to get a perspective on my life.

You can see what it looks like here.

My answer is slightly biased since I built my own journalling app that is designed to fulfill my needs (and a few others I know). My basic style is:

    • Many short entries in a day instead of one large one. It means I can write about events when they happen and it feels more like an instant messenger conversation with myself.
    • Ability to tag friends and family. It'll send me reminders when I don't mention someone too long. I also use it to keep track of watering my plants (i.e. my plant friends).
    • I use it both on mobile and laptop, so I want it accessible anywhere via the web.

I used to have a paper journal and a thing called the "friend rotation" which I used to constantly cycle through meeting people for personal/professional reasons. I realized that I could combine the two into one thing. Also, my handwriting is trash and slow...

Oh, you have full encryption? Cool. I am writing a journal app as well and have been struggling to come up with a foolproof way that I could under no circumstances get around my own security and read my users' posts. If you are interested in talking about that, let me know.

Hey! I took a hiatus from IH. If you still want to chat, let me know. It's probably too late now 😅

Definitely something new to hear. Personally, never felt a need to maintaining friend/family tagging thing. Nice idea though.

    I use https://roamresearch.com/
Most comfortable one I've used in years

Roam is amazing. Journaling in it is so effortless from the daily note, and knowing that my notes will inevitably resurface due to linking is a reassuring feeling I’m putting my time to good use.

This is a great resource, thanks!

I use Apple Notes app for default journaling and todos. Evernote for research or content drafts.

I recently started writing journal and I use the editor I've on my own site to write those. I made it according to my need. https://hasnayeen.dev/journal

I use Lifetick for journaling, and have been for years. I like it's simplicity, the date stamping on each entry and the fact you can simply scroll up and down to see all your previous entries.

There's other features like setting up tasks and goals but I prefer to write those down on paper.

I'm a terminal junky so I use jrnl.

    For notes, I use Joplin.

Interesting, but have you tried other editors? I mean, there should be more functionality and features on some tools like Evernote, any markdown editor?

      1. 1

I tried evernote and many others. I don't want functionalities. I want speed, simplicity, and data ownership.

Taking note to me is: writing a bunch of words and be able to search for it. That's all.

I've a huge fan of Evernote, simple and sync across devices :)

I’ve been journaling for many years. It has become a cornerstone habit for me, both professionally and personally.
I’ve tried several tools, and I’ve settled on Microsoft Onenote because it is simple and powerful, very stable nowadays (it wasn’t the case a few years back), it works like a charm on all the platforms I’m using (Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and web) meaning I can start a note in the elevator on my phone and finish it on the laptop (I do that all the time). I’m sure plenty of other apps do the same, so if I were you I would try a few of them and make a choice based on you personal taste. Good journaling!

Having tried dozens like: Evernote, wunderlist, Google notes, apple notes, and even the msft one the ultimate one that works is: Paper. And here's why:

    • paper allows you to draw easily
    • no distractions, just paper
    • always works, not dependent on internet, app updates etc.

Lastly, I keep notes to see how I progress and be confronted with it when I'm not on the right track. Paper allows me to browse back and quickly see that. It is much faster than anything else (and I am a die hard VIM user).

I started my bulletjournal in october last year. https://bulletjournal.com/

I really love the offline approach

I know it doesn't sound very techy, but I write my journal with Microsoft Word. I have been writing in the same document almost every day for more than 10 years, so I guess it is working fine for me.

    1. 1

Is there some pain point you face, I mean word requires a lot of formatting and copy pasting.

      1. 1

For writing a journal I don't copy and paste and I never change the format. It is just plain text.
        For notes I use Evernote.

  13. 1

I use one I created for myself and is the first web app I ever built which taught me a lot about databases. Still using it today and many other have hopped on board. https://mypost.io

If you're interested in writing notes about meetings and conversations you've had with other people, try out my app, called Contacts Journal. It's more of a "personal CRM" system for iOS and Mac, but a great way to think about journaling. Check it out: www.contactsjournal.com

To me, the main trouble has always been my sloppy attitude toward consistency when it came to taking notes. In practice, it seems like any tool works as long as your attitude is there (I'm currently using Apple Notes).

Well, it's all about habit you get into once, then it's just normal. Would recommend Atomic Habits book.

Read that twice I believe (great book 👍) and also use those techniques in some parts of my life.

Now that I've analyzed it, I believe the main reason for not journaling my life is that I simply don't find it useful/entertaining enough. 😃

I mostly write in a moleskine notebook. Curious to here other productivity tools

    1. 1

Oh, nice. Personally I prefer some app/tools on my mobile/mac. Having a hard copy everywhere is a bit of trouble.
