I'd like to know if you struggle with marketing your skills as a developer and command higher than average rates or work on what you actually want to?
How much of your time do you spend on marketing instead of developing?
What mediums do you find useful fo marketing you skills?
Yes I find it very hard time marketing my skills as a developer. I am a freelance core PHP developer with Wordpress,Laravel, Codeignitor and Slim Framework experience.
So due to this I work with few clients and I try to market instead of developing only when I have less or no work.
I used freelancing sites in past which I feel very boring to post bid for different projects for which you cannot be sure client might look at your proposal or not or will contact you. So I completely stopped using it.
Now I try to use linkend, twitter or other remote job sites randomly directly to get projects and sometimes creating simple wordpress plugin and submitting it on wordpress repository which get you work if anyone need custom development.
Thanks for the feedback. So do you consider freelancing easier or harder than a regular job? Do you have your own website or Git profile?
If you are self learner and have good skills at whatever technology you work on then it is easier even if you are not good at marketing skills. I like to do freelancing as it gives you freedom to work at your own time so I find it more comfortable than regular job. So this is working fine for me even though I have less clients I keep getting work from them due to my skills.
No I don't have a website. I had it in past but it was no use for me for marketing so removed.
I have git profile but nothing to see their yet because even though I work on open source I was not able to contribute much to the community yet. So not able to find time for it yet but it's in my list.
Thanks.
