Hey everyone,
I've been working remotely for around 2 years, and I'm still struggling. Is there anyone else who struggles as well? What do you struggle with? What works for you?
I'd love to hear your stories!
Honestly, I miss working with people. I still interact with a team over slack, email, and zoom, but that's very different than being in-person with a team.
I work from coffee shops quite a bit. I also make an effort to get out of my house at least once a day whether it's a simple walk, hanging out with friends, or going to the gym.
The game-changer for me was when I got into a hobby that I could do in my house. For me, it was a big aquarium. Whenever I need a break I do some work or research on the aquarium. It gives me something to focus on and enjoy without having to go out and spend time/money.
I can't imagine having to work in an office again. For some people the structure and routine of working from an office is very beneficial. For me though, it just added extra layers of existential dread to my already large distaste for the monotony of "working life".
If anything, I start to struggle with the fact that so many people are working remotely now (sounds mean, but I'd love for everyone to be able to do this, regardless). The reason I say this, is because I left the well-paid corporate job behind because I didn't want to drive to an office every day, move to a part of the world I didn't want to be in, and I didn't want to limit my upside potential either.
Going self-employed lets me solve all of that, at the "small" price of job uncertainty and irregular income. While I can work from anywhere, my "only" risk for being granted that freedom is cash flow issues.
Next to me at the coffee shop, however, is now someone who works for Big Corporation Inc., making +$7500 a month plus vacation plus health insurance plus family benefits plus flexible work arrangements, and next-to-zero risk.
So ten years in, I sometimes wonder if the upside potential (which I haven't been able to take that much advantage of so far) is actually worth me fighting to stay away from whatever the corporate world looks like ... now. When, perhaps, it's gotten a lot better there?
Just thoughts.
You described my situation perfectly. I made a list of all the reasons why I wanted to start my own business, but when I looked at the lifestyle aspects...I have all that freedom now. I work in customer success leadership at a Series C unicorn. I have no office. I have flexible hours. I only work on stuff that matters.
The "pains" that I previously had...no longer exist. Now, I look at my side projects as a way to pay for silly purchases and vacations instead of trying to replace my salary. Honestly, I feel a lot healthier since making the mental switch.
Hey @heyjonas!
When I first started in full time Remote Work this year, I definitely struggled in terms of getting distracted easily and finding a good space in my apartment to work. I've found that working outside of a space where I usually go to to relax in my home, really helps! As well as leaving the apartment once in a while to work in a different space.
Funnily enough, the company that I now work for developed a very innovative solution to these hurdles! At oVice (ovice.in), we provide access to virtual spaces for our users where they can customize it and make it their own! You can turn it into a virtual office, host events, study space, etc.
Our goal is to really optimize the remote work experience by giving our users the ability to interact with their peers in real time. This helps promote productivity and collaboration and I feel it can really help you stay focused, no matter where you are in the world!
Check us out at tour-en.ovice.in to have a look around and see how it works. :)
Just distract yourself from time to time, do some exercises, play darts for example.
I'm coming up on 2 years working from home as well and I won't be returning to the office at any point in the near future (not by choice, no office to return to now, everyone is remote)
I struggle with it sometimes. There are a lot of things I enjoy about working from home but coming up on the 2 year mark I'm finding it more difficult than before. I'm thinking about joining a co-working space in the near future to get back to more of an office feel. Haven't done it yet but I'm eyeing a few in my area.
I also do a lot of video on, casual meetings with my remote co-workers. I know not everyone loves this but I find it leads to a better feeling of connection for me.
I definitely miss working with people in the same physical space. Most of the days I am happy with the WBE Space because we have a virtual office and we work together. But there is this nice feeling of being in the same physical space that the virtual world still can not replicate.
yes
In what way do you struggle with it?
I'm very happy with remote work. But, I needed to find a good routine to get to that point. There were weeks when I barely left the house, which wasn't good for me. Now I make sure to do something every day. For example, I started working in cafes.
Happy this is working for you! I'm worried I can't try this right now because of Covid... but maybe in the future!
For me, it feels all over the place. Little structure, focus decreased, easy to work overtime.
I frequently work at coffee shops but sit outside because it feels safer. Of course, I can only go when there is nice weather.
I can understand the other issues you are facing. I think you have to set boundaries. I am fortunate enough to have my own dedicated office at home. Once I close the door at the end of the day, I’m done with work. If you don’t have a office, try setting up a dedicated place for your work somewhere.
The nice thing about working remotely is you can take breaks when you need to. Go for a walk. Or even take a nap.
Try to block out times in your schedule for work and stick to a routine. But don’t be afraid to mix things up every now and then too. Flexible/remote work is best for me.
