Do you think it's worthwhile investing in paid advertising or better to target communities in Reddit? Hints from YCombinator

I got asked this question in another post where feedback was offered for peoples' short descriptions of their projects (https://www.indiehackers.com/post/want-feedback-on-your-project-description-from-a-former-vc-9f288b0e2c?commentId=-NL-iRYTX-KT6eDVXDre).

A couple of our team members worked in adtech. The feeling is that, unless you know your audience very very well AND are already proficient in paid ads, you're probably better off building a userbase in other ways.
