When i started blogging, I think newsletter are just for marketing and driving traffic to your website. People Subscribe newsletter for downloading free E-books. ( Newsletter is not Big thing ). I don't know Newsletter will be in paid Form.
In Year 2019 & 2020, Many SaaS Companies started Subscription Business Model.
Gumroad also offer subscription Service to Creators.
Twitter started Revue ( A newsletter tool ) For Writers & Publishers.
So Now, Peoples Started Paid Newsletter as a Side hustle on their Specific Niche.
What you think about Newsletter industry is growing with Creator's Economy.

As I understand right now, newsletters express the whish to stay up to date after onboarding a subject matter.
You say, they were a thing, and I think I can see why. They free you from the burden of skimming news outlet headlines and other sources.
I guess, well curated content will always sell.

I didn't answer you right away, but hope it helps, anyway.
Oh, I recieve some newsletters, but seldomly read them. The better the subject line, the more likely I will open them. But I collect most of them in designated folders.
