i'm launching on Product Hunt today. Unicorn Platform has huge community and always warmly supported by users and makers.
however, my product is outranked by a company which:
i believe it is impossible for a young company to fairly rank #1 on Product Hunt without a product and without a community. with all my respect and deep love to Product Hunt, i wish them reconsider their algorithm and make ranking more fair.
but since i'm biased, i may be wrong. this is why i attached a poll to this discussion π
p.s. i sent a DM to the Product Hunt CEO, Ashley Higgins. waiting for the reply.
Hi,
It's Itay from theGist here.
I understand the frustration of competing with funded teams, but I would like to clarify a few things.
I have been working on theGist for 2 years now. I started as an indie developer and eventually decided to raise funds.
We have multiple publicly available products that are used by thousands of companies and tens of thousands of users. These include theGist for Slack and Gmail for Slack. The new product, theGist Workspace, is live and currently being used by a few dozen users as we gradually launch it. Since we are a small team and building this product involves significant complexity, this approach makes it easier for us to manage.
Just to clarify, we do have a Twitter account. π
We did not purchase media coverage. We have a marketing lead in-house who reaches out to tech reporters through cold emails. Our story was something that most of them found exciting.
Most of our votes came from the startup community in Israel and our existing community of theGist for Slack users. We have put in a lot of effort to prepare for this launch and ensure we receive support from our theGist for Slack users.
I would like to finish by expressing my love for this community and how I have been following it since its early days. I understand that it can be challenging to compete with funded companies, but as an indie developer, you also have several advantages over us.
Wishing you the best of luck with your product, and sending love to all you indie hackers! β€οΈ

I'm so sorry to hear that. Nonetheless, it became more of a channel for marketing than a place for people to share their experiences. Don't expect anything more than that.
Product Hunt was never a place for people to share their experiences, it's even in their name, you go to hunt for products (in a place they market it a.k.a put it in front of you). Like I said, even the name yells 'marketing'.
Yes, you are correct. I might have misunderstood the whole idea.
I understand your frustration with the current ranking on Product Hunt. It can be disheartening to see a company without a product outrank yours. However, it's important to remember that algorithms can be complex and there might be other factors at play. Keep up the great work, and I wish you all the best!
