Hi hackers,
I've been tinkering with the idea of building a service which will send its users human-friendly reports highlighting important metrics at regular intervals (daily/weekly/monthly) sourcing it's data from Google Analytics.
I have been talking to a bunch of people who runs internet businesses and most of them have responded positively & acknowledged the problem of a big learning curve with Google analytics. They also acknowledge that it is tedious to open GA regularly and do 100s of clicks to make sense of the data.
There is already a service called "briefmetrics" which does the same thing but hasn't been updated in years. I reached out the founder and he has no plans on working on his product improvements.
Do you think I should pursue this product? Do you think there is a market? what more validations should I be looking into?
Seems like I could be a little too late but I am working on shanc which focuses on the same idea.
Would love to know what insights you gathering during your market research. 😊
Have you tried thinking about your service in terms of Jobs to be Done?
That's a great video by the way. The core idea is that your product is hired by the customer to do a job, and therefore you're in competition with other products that do the same job.
So is the job here "Make sense of Google Analytics data"? Or is it "Give me human-friendly reports on my website traffic"?
You may find you're competing with the crowded marketplace of human-friendly analytics companies:
That can be a good thing; there's clearly lots of demand. And the fact that you are "built on your existing google analytics" could be a powerful advantage for businesses who are deeply embedded in Google's ecosystem.
Thanks for sharing the video – I will definitely watch it.
I believe the job here is "Human-friendly reports on my website traffic". Great! this helps me narrow down my audience.
About the competition, I feel MixPanel, Segment etc. are focused on high data producing products where analytics plays a huge role in improving the product.
I'm thinking of targeting professionals using WordPress, Shopify, Wix etc. Since most of the already have GA integrated into their platforms and they would need help in improvising. Getting a friendly report on what is working & what isn't with actionable nuggets would be of a great help of this audience. What do you think of this?
Yep, leveraging GA would help me ease my offering with a click of a button without any hassle.
Looks like a great idea. Especially if you target less techie founders/website owners. As you say, they know they have to check their metrics but ' it is tedious to open GA regularly and do 100s of clicks to make sense of the data'.
-'Do you think there is a market?' -> @zephod reply and your positioning which differs from existing products seem to indicate so.
-'what more validations should I be looking into?' -> $$. Contact again the 'bunch of people' you talked to. Ask them to pay $X per week, per month or per report, then ship them their reports. No need to build anything yet besides these reports. If they pay, it's a good sign, and if they keep paying it's a really good sign.
This is really a sane advice which I needed to hear, Thank you.
In coming weeks, I will generate the report for founders who expressed initial interests in the product & see how well they respond. I'll keep sharing my progress here with you all. :)
Happy to help !
what about this? https://twitter.com/ProductHunt/status/989459220000067584
This seems really generic tho.
Regarding that, are your reports generic as well, the same for everyone? or are they custom made for each website needs? this could be a premium feature 🤔
Hmmm... yeah, that's very generic. Also, there is no human-friendly aspect to it.
I'm more inclined towards making it human-friendly & probably suggest actionable too.
Yes, I'm going to generate a report based on the category of the website like blog, e-commerce, landing page, application etc. However, I will be picking up only one category to begin with.
Hi Bilal! I just joined this community and searched for something containing "Google analytics".
I had a very similar dilema, I asked some people about that idea and I decided to develop it: https://dailytics.com
Let me know what do you think about it and I would love an update on this thread... did you do it?
Have a great week!
Hi Gustavo, Thanks for sharing your side of the story. I'm intrigued to know that you've already built & launched the product on a similar concept. I would love to know more about the feedback you're getting after launch, and other metrics if it is not too much to ask for.
I have a functional prototype in place which is being used by a couple of customers. I'm gathering more feedbacks from them & making iterations. I would be happy to share more about the product with you.
Looking forward to hearing back from you, have a productive week ahead!
Hi @BilalBudhani! I see that once the user meets the product and start getting the report they become addicted to it :)
The delivery has failed a couple of times and I start receiving emails immediately!
I also see that many reports are sent to a whole team and (at least at my work, ArchDaily) we start conversations from that report, specially when the report indicates that we broke a new record.
For new users, I think that the most frictional step is giving access to Dailytics to read your Google Analytics data.
I would love to see your solution!
Hey Gustavo,
This is very interesting to know, even in my case I experience a bit of reflectance from potential users in giving away Google Analytics access, it took some convincing from my side to make them comfortable.
I started with daily reports but it was becoming too overwhelming for users and some of them requested to opt out of it. Then I had to switch it to weekly, I dunno how you do it.
I'm yet to put up a public landing page and start accepting sign ups, but I would be happy to show you the prototype and I would love to ask you some doubts about the idea validation myself. Let me know what's a good way to connect.
Awesome! you can find my personal email in my IH profile.
Yes, daily reports can be a little overwhelming for some kind of users. That's why I implemented daily, weekly and monthly reports so they can choose the periodicity they want.
@BilalBudhani I think this is a really great idea. What I like:
Very cool idea, would love to see an MVP :)
Thank you, Justin, for the feedback :). All the replies here are really encouraging and motivating. I'm going to dive into the MVP part of it & share it with the community soon.
Someone did this for google search console, cant remember the name though
Oh really?! I would love to see the product. Please the link whenever it comes to your mind. Thank you :)
Paul Jarvis shared something about doing something similar - https://twitter.com/pjrvs/status/985874315563286528
oh, I see. I think there is a big difference, he is offering a full analytics product rather than building on top of Google Analytics.
You spoke to all these founders who showed interest.
That’s great. Have you read Mom’s test? I highly recommend reading that book to avoid confirmation bias.
Oh, Nice! Never heard about this book. I'll check it out.
Anyways, what do you think about this?
Been there, done that. Only problem was scope of the product was too low so I moved on.
Did you try this exact same idea? What went wrong? I would like to talk to you more on this...
We should get on a call. I will DM you my email on twitter.
looking forward to it.
Thank you very much. i think a lot of people are looking for such a content from you. hope you will have more share such.
