Do you understand what Driftly does within 10 seconds?

Hey! Joe here, co-founder of Driftly. @jacobbeckerman originally started this company because all the other interactive guided tour products on the market for SaaS companies are focused on enterprise ($1,000+/mo), don't have intuitive builders or simply have pricing that doesn't scale with their customers.

We want Driftly to have the simplest and most effective builder out there, serve the indie maker market AND have pricing that's based on impressions (not active monthly users).

We've recently done some customer interviews and made some changes to our homepage to better target SaaS indie hackers.

The biggest questions we'd love answered in the comments and poll below are...

  • Do you understand what Driftly does within 10 seconds?
  • Would you use this tool instead of building interactive product tours and checklists into your platform natively?
  • What (specifically) is stopping you from starting a free trial today?

Leave a comment with some feedback and we'll hook you up with a free trial of Driftly. Plus, Jacob will create a few personalized onboarding flows for you and just simply hand over the account. Teamwork makes the dream work!

P.S. We're here most of the day on driftly.app livechat so come say hi and ask us questions.

    Congratulations @joehhoward & @jacobbeckerman!

Do you understand what Driftly does within 10 seconds?
    Yes

Would you use this tool instead of building interactive product tours and checklists into your platform natively?
No, we are not looking for one at the moment

What (specifically) is stopping you from starting a free trial today?
No, we are not looking for one at the moment

    Some observations:

    • If your USP is selling it based on the usage, I would have highlighted that problem in the hero section to convert those users to use the product which I do not see at the moment on the website
    • Instead of "show me around" CTA, would it make it easy to say "see Driftly in action" ?
I was assuming it would auto-scroll or do something else if I press the CTA but it did quickly show the driftly in action

    Hope it helps!

Please feel free to DM me on Twitter (notifykamalraj) if you need any clarification. I can take a look at your app and future versions of the website and give you feedback as well. Hope we can add value to each other as makers!

Thanks for taking the time for such robust feedback, Kamal! You rock.

      Yes

      Nice!

No, we are not looking for one at the moment

Why specifically isn't Notesally looking for one at the moment? 👀

Purely for customer research. Not trying to sell you haha!

If your USP is selling it based on the usage, I would have highlighted that problem in the hero section to convert those users to use the product which I do not see at the moment on the website.

      Understood!

I think the reason I decided not to mention the usage-based pricing in the H1 or H2 header is because I thought it was more important for people to know exactly what our product could do for them before learning about pricing. I didn't want to stick pricing information in your face before you even know what Driftly did. Would feel a bit too pushy on the sales side as well.

I think once people know what it is, they can assess if it's something they need/want. Then they can investigate pricing if they want.

So in my mind, explaining what Driftly does to as many people as possible is my first priority. Details about pricing are secondary.

Instead of "show me around" CTA, would it make it easy to say "see Driftly in action" ? I was assuming it would auto-scroll or do something else if I press the CTA but it did quickly show the driftly in action

You're the second person to comment about this CTA. Virtual high five! An update to that text is already in the works.

Please feel free to DM me on Twitter (notifykamalraj) if you need any clarification. I can take a look at your app and future versions of the website and give you feedback as well. Hope we can add value to each other as makers!

Will do and you know it! Let me know if there's anything I can help out with around. Notesally 🤜🏽 🤛🏽

I read the title of the post and decided to go to the website without reading the rest of the post, so as not to have any information beforehand. I didn't know what I was looking at from just reading the text. Using the 'Show me around' button made it click for me though. I did that within 10 seconds, so I guess the answer to your first question is: yes.

As for your other questions: no. That doesn't have anything to do with my perceived value or quality of your product. I just don't have a need for something like that right now.

    1. 1

Thanks so much for taking the time to click through, Michelz! You rock.

I didn't know what I was looking at from just reading the text. Using the 'Show me around' button made it click for me though. I did that within 10 seconds, so I guess the answer to your first question is: yes.

      Cool!

It's really good to know that the text when you land on the page didn't quite make our product click for you but the actual demo tour did. May make some changes to that text to make it even simpler verbiage.

As for your other questions: no. That doesn't have anything to do with my perceived value or quality of your product. I just don't have a need for something like that right now.

Totally understand. No hard feelings at all. Not all indie products are for all people, nor should they be 😁

  4. 2

In ten seconds it looked like a tool I could use to create an onboarding flow for my users.

    1. 1

That's about right, Tiago! Thanks so much for the feedback. You rock.

      1. 1

I stoped because I was not looking for a tool like that at the moment so I just opened because of your post

        1. 1

          Gotcha. Makes complete sense.

If you're ever in need of a product tour tool, you know where to find us! 😎

Makes sense to me! I would use this. I’m still in heavy pivot mode responding to customer feedback so I don’t know what my “wow” moment is for my app.

    1. 1

Thanks for your reply here, Cory!

Makes sense to me! I would use this.

Cool! Post-pivot, would you pay for it ($25/mo for 5,000 triggers) to start? :)

I’m still in heavy pivot mode responding to customer feedback so I don’t know what my “wow” moment is for my app.

Gotcha. As of right now, our tool is to help more of your users get to those "wow" moments so it might just be that you're just not quite ready for a tool like Driftly. I think our guided tours could help you determine what your "wow" moments are through the analytics we're building out but it's not specifically what we're designing Driftly to do (right now). If that focus changes, I'll be sure to let you know!

      1. 1

That price is a no-brainer if I was looking for this solution.

        1. 1

          Sweet!

What about trying it out @ $25/mo for 1,000 triggers (instead of 5,000)?

We may have talked about adjusting the number of triggers for each tier today...

      Yes

      Double nice!

We are about to adopt an integration from one of your competitors who offers a free plan - sufficient for our needs for now.

You're sure we can't entice you to a nice free trial of Driftly? 14-day free trial and then $25/mo for up to 1,000 impressions! We only have 1 competitor with a free tier and we think our builder is much more intuitive.

So...what do you think? Give us a shot? 😎

  7. 1
    1. Yes

    2. When I'm looking to add better onboarding, I think so. It looks like it'd save me more than a day of time, which already beats having to code in some guide onboarding which probably doesn't work as well. Which is worth it for me at $25/month.

    3. Was looking for a docs page on how I'd integrate. Not clear how we link server <--> chrome extension (says there's an embed script). Also personal nit on the Driftly tour some of the padding on some elements looks off (too small?).

  8. 1

Do you understand what Driftly does within 10 seconds?
    Yes!

Would you use this tool instead of building interactive product tours and checklists into your platform natively?
No, as a developer it’s easy enough to get a tour up and running in a few minutes with an npm package like reactour.

What (specifically) is stopping you from starting a free trial today?
    See previous answer

As a heads up, the video on the site won’t play for me on mobile chrome or safari; I’m on an iPhone 12 mini on iOS 14.8.1. See https://imgur.com/a/v42uKQC

    1. 1

Hey there, thanks for reporting this. I was unable to reproduce this on my end, but I tried playing around with the format and size of the video and it would be super helpful if you could check if the issue still occurs by you. If it does, I may have to look into using a different hosting provider for video assets.

      Thanks!

      Awesome!

No, as a developer it’s easy enough to get a tour up and running in a few minutes with an npm package like reactour.

Makes sense. We've heard this a good amount and have adjusted our target market accordingly. Great feedback!

Thanks for the heads up! Are you using any adblockers or a privacy browser like DuckDuckGo? That might affect it. I'll shoot this to Jacob to take a look at regardless.

I'm using AdGuard on iOS, but I just tried turning it off and the video still doesn't work!

This is nice. I was thinking of building the exact same product just a month ago 😉 as I felt the products were a bit expensive for indie makers.

There's definitely validation here :) But then started working on Famewall after that

Thanks, Goutham! It's good validation to see other companies in the market building similar tools (means there is a market). But also good to hear other folks had ideas to build something similar. Hopefully means we're on the right track!

But then started working on Famewall after that

Twitter walls! We'll need one of those at some point. And we know where to find the tool for it 😉

That's awesome Joe. I will look toward using your tool once I start generating revenue for my product. Added driftly to my notion page 😉

P.S. That's nice of you Joe. You can also get customers to directly add text testimonials with the testimonial collection tool :)

2 No - due to our product being too simple to need a demo for this price.
    3 Haven't launched yet :)

Had a look through mate - just check you're happy with the image sizes/alignment past the opening video - not as neat as it could be for me (Desktop + Edge)

      Yes

      Excellent!

No - due to our product being too simple to need a demo for this price.

Gotcha. Does that mean you don't think "simple" software needs tours, checklists to guide users through the most important features? 👀

      Haven't launched yet :)

Good luck building to launch! Looking forward to seeing CollabClub in action :)

Had a look through mate - just check you're happy with the image sizes/alignment past the opening video - not as neat as it could be for me (Desktop + Edge)

Good point, Maxwell. It's the style of a section like this to have the left/right side of the images hanging off the side a bit. But I could see how that could look like an unintentional mistake given the images are screenshots with text in them that could get cut off. We'll take a look at this!

      1. 1

Ha ha - well I was more along the lines that if the UX is that poor that people don't understand it then we have a fundamental problem!

But it's also the opportunity cost in terms of the outlay - as a startup I'd prefer to improve discovery of the app than work on optimizing conversion. Once I'm reaching people and they're coming to the site I might start to work on the conversion side of things.

        1. 1

You're talking about the images in these sections, right Maxwell?

          • Build tours and checklists directly in your app
          • Target and segment users
          • Increase new user activation at scale
          • Encourage and reward your users

Well I was more along the lines that if the UX is that poor that people don't understand it then we have a fundamental problem!

We've gotten plenty of feedback here and elsewhere that people are pretty easily understanding the product and like the UI of the website. You're the first person to comment on these images actually! So it doesn't seem like a fundamental problem based on the feedback I've received so far.

But it's also the opportunity cost in terms of the outlay.

This I agree with. What I'm most concerned with at this point is for people on our website to think we made a basic mistake with the site design, especially on something that's not actually a mistake but could be construed as one! "If they can make that kindof mistake, they'll probably make mistakes with their product too, right?" Don't want to give people even one excuse to have thoughts like this. All positive interactions!

As a startup I'd prefer to improve discovery of the app than work on optimizing conversion. Once I'm reaching people and they're coming to the site I might start to work on the conversion side of things.

I don't completely disagree with you, but I also don't agree haha.

I agree you shouldn't work on pure conversion when you don't have any traffic. What I'm doing now is not conversion optimization! It's customer research and user validation (thus why I'm asking for landing page feedback here).

But before you start going hard on discovery, you need to get your basic messaging and positioning at least in a good first draft. Who are your ideal buyers? What kindof language do they use (that you can incorporate in the copy of your website)? Where do those customers hang out?

If you try to get people to your website first, there's a high chance you'll engage with people in the wrong places, target the wrong buyers AND use ineffective language to draw them in. It becomes a big waste of time!

This all being said, it's nearly impossible to get your messaging and positioning perfect your first time around. You'll end up engaging in discovery and realizing some folks were targeted well and some weren't. Then you make changes to continue positioning yourself even better for your ideal buyers. So eventually you need to engage in both messaging & positioning AND discovery at one time and let each side influence the other.

          Boom!

          1. 1

Hi Joe - think we have our wires crossed here. I wasn't specifically talking about the UI/UX of your site it was in general.

And yes absolutely agree that discovery isn't everything 😀

            1. 1

              Haha async communication fail!

Gotcha. Sounds like we're on more of the same page now.

    To answer your questions:

    • Yes, it's super clear to me what this does
    • Maybe
    • Not currently looking to implement product tours

The answer to the second question is a maybe because if I was looking for a "product tours" solution, I'd honestly probably go with a more established player that is more likely to be around in a couple of years.

That's something that's naturally solved though as you continue to exist and grow your brand!

    1. 1

Yes, it's super clear to me what this does

      Dope!

The answer to the second question is a maybe because if I was looking for a "product tours" solution, I'd honestly probably go with a more established player that is more likely to be around in a couple of years.

Makes total sense. No hard feelings at all. I wouldn't knock anybody who would rather work with a more establish company that's more likely to be around in the coming years.

That's something that's naturally solved though as you continue to exist and grow your brand!

      So true!

Not currently looking to implement product tours

Not in any of your 5 products? Why not? 👀

    Hi Joe,

I got it straight away and I like your h1 copy. Informative but also compelling.
My background is design and I think you’ve done a good job in that department too.

In terms of product idea, I also thing this good. I forget the name of your big competitor but I do remember being amazed by how expensive they are.

We probably wouldn’t use it. Just because we have an annoying first step that requires customers to add a script tag to their website theme. This requires either an email to us or a click through to a step-by-step guide.
It’s usually the former which means the onboarding flow temporarily stops.
If you have any bright ideas around that problem, I’d love to hear them.

    1. 1

Thanks so much for taking the time to check out Driftly and write up this comment, Oli! You rock.

I got it straight away and I like your h1 copy. Informative but also compelling. My background is design and I think you’ve done a good job in that department too.

Appreciate the shout. I put this copy together after doing some customer interviews so I was hopeful it would reflect those conversations. Sounds like we're at least on the right path there.

All design work done by @jacobbeckerman. I agree it's pretty solid!

In terms of product idea, I also thing this good. I forget the name of your big competitor but I do remember being amazed by how expensive they are.

Haha yep. UserPilot, Appcues and Intercom are our most expensive "competitors." Honestly, we don't even see them as direct competitors. They're all priced to focus on enterprise companies ($1,000+/mo, tons of "contact sales" verbiage on their websites, etc.

Intercom spans a bigger market but they've also raised $241M of funding so they're going to go BIG haha.

We're likely going to focus on SaaS platforms that have already seen some growth and need to improve metrics around user onboarding, new feature adoption, customer engagement, churn, lifetime value, etc. But not go as big as enterprise.

Well, we'd love Driftly to make "annoying first steps" easier for your users! Do you think a guided tour with step 1 pointing folks towards the script tag and explains how to add it to their website would be helpful? It's a use case we've talked about internally and think Driftly would be useful for. This would increase the number of customers who install this script correctly AND minimize support around this step. What do you think? 👀

    2. 1

Interestingly enough, Driftly also requires customers to add a script tag to their website so the customer has to spend some time "off site" in order to get things up and running.

I don't have a solution for that yet, but Driftly isn't only for onboarding new users. It also allows you to guide your users to experience the amazing parts of your app once they're already set up.

  13. 1

In 10 seconds, the only words I skimmed were:

    • Use interactive product tours to nudge users towards that WOW moment
    • Build tours and checklists directly in your app

Everything else felt more heavy and less skim-able, e.g. the quote.

Do you understand what Driftly does within 10 seconds?

    So yes!

Would you use this tool instead of building interactive product tours and checklists into your platform natively?

No. As a developer, I’d probably build it. I’d buy a lifetime license though.

What (specifically) is stopping you from starting a free trial today?

    The pricing

I’ve seen a couple of these onboarding SaaS and thought they looked cool. Definitely worth considering implementing a product tour.

Why are you better than https://react-joyride.com/ or https://reactour.vercel.app/ ?

    1. 1

      So yes!

      Sweet!

No. As a developer, I’d probably build it.

We've heard this from a few people, mostly early-stage indie hackers. Jacob is my co-founder and has the same opinion haha. It's why we're likely going to shift our target market slightly upmarket to SaaS platforms that have already seen some growth and need to improve metrics around user onboarding, new feature adoption, customer engagement, churn, lifetime value, etc.

I’d buy a lifetime license though.

Oh, really? If you want to grab one this week, just hop into livechat with Jacob or I and we'll hook you up!

Why are you better than https://react-joyride.com/ or https://reactour.vercel.app/ ?

@jacobbeckerman already answered this here 😛

    2. 1

I would say Driftly is better than those libraries for the following reasons

      • The speed with which you can actually create a tour. With Driftly it’s just point and click and your tour is ready. With the libraries you mentioned there’s coding involved. Which brings me into my second point.

      • Not everyone can code. If a founder is unable to code, these libraries don’t actually help unless the hire a developer to create the tours. Which brings me to the next point.

      • Developer time is a very large expense. Even if the developer charges $30/hr, that’s what Driftly costs for a month! Not to mention the costs for the developer to maintain the tour when the website changes.

Full disclosure - I’m the technical founder of Driftly.

    Hi:

    1. Do you understand it? -> Yes

I definitely understood after your first sentences what the goal is and why it is here. Building product tours can be really cumbersome :D

    1. Would you use it? -> Yes
I would definitely give it a try

    2. Whats stopping you?
I don't need to build a tour at the moment :D

Are you sure you don't want to give this a shot on Deposur? Looks like you crossed the 1,000 user mark a few months ago (congrats!). If you want to more easily nudge your users towards those "aha" moments on your platform, hop into livechat with me anytime.

      1. 1

Thanks for that but deposur is mainly an app in react-native. But if I would add something it would be probably that but atm I am not actively developing on that project :)

        1. 1

Understood. No worries at all! We just want to be helpful where we can be haha.

Keep up the good work on whatever you're working on these days!

    1. Yes, very clear from the banner. The start tour button should be more prominent (stand out color), because I enjoyed learning from that more than reading page details.

    2. No, I'd probably build them myself to keep recurring costs down. However, I do not think I will have a product tour either way.

    1. 1

The start tour button should be more prominent (stand out color), because I enjoyed learning from that more than reading page details.

Thanks for this specific feedback! We will consider it but do want to keep the site & colors simple (all action buttons a single color).

Also glad to hear you enjoyed learning via the tour than just reading the site. We're hoping there are lots of folks out there like you!

No, I'd probably build them myself to keep recurring costs down.

No product tour at all? Why not?? 👀

  16. 1

Definitely makes sense to me. I think I found an issue with the show me around button at the top of the page. I was in mobile if that helps.

Definitely plan on giving this a try and hen I get to that stage hopefully in the not too distant future

    1. 1

Nice, Chris! Definitely give me a shout when you decide to give it a try and Jacob and I will hook you up with a free trial and some personalized tours for Crash Catch.

A couple quick follow up questions...

      1. What stage will you be at when you're ready to give Driftly a try? What stage are you at today?
      2. Mind if I ask what issue you found with the show me around button on mobile? We'll take a look but it would help if we knew what we should be looking for haha.

      Thanks, man! :)

        1. To be honest I'm not sure. The project is up and running but working on something else for the time being, so once that's done I plan to get back to Crash Catch - but next to impossible to know how long unfortunately as only have evenings and weekends to work on it.

        2. Just nothing happened when I clicked it. I saw on desktop browser it changes to the text to "Loading" and then shows how Driftly works but on mobile didn't appear to trigger anything. It might have been though because I was within the browser within the Twitter mobile app, if I Switch out of that to a proper browser then it worked OK.

          1. Makes total sense. Working on that 5-9 project when you have a 9-5 can be tough but it's often the best way to slowly but surely go full-time on your side gig. Keep at it!
          2. Are you using an ad blocker or privacy browser like DuckDuckGo? That or the browser within the Twitter app may have had something to do about it. I've passed it along to Jacob to take a look at it.

I've retested it and its definitely the twitter in app browser where the button doesn't work, if I switch out of that to a normal browser (chrome) then it works fine. Don't have any ad blockers on my phone.

Odd, it seems to be working for me. What device do you have?

Oh that's odd. I have an iphone 12 Pro

Okay, I'm going to have to look into this a bit more

Bug squashing in an Indie Hackers comment thread. Love it!

Thanks so much for your feedback here, Prakrith! You rock.

Also, I read this "Other apps charge you every month regardless of usage. Our pricing model is based on the number of guided tours and checklists your users actually experience". This makes me think you have a usage-based pricing model like AWS for example. However your pricing section lists fixed subscription rates.

I think I understand your confusion here. Most of the other guided tour platforms charge per active monthly user, meaning you'll be charged based on how many people use your platform, NOT how many people see guided tours.

Driftly does charge a monthly subscription but it's based on triggers or impressions. That means you still pay a monthly fee but it's based how many times our checklists and tours are actually seen by your users. We believe this is a more fair way to price and scales with your business as it grows!

Would it be more clear to you if the pricing said "$0.25/trigger up to 1,000 triggers" instead of "$25/mo for up to 1,000 triggers"? 👀

Got it. This makes a lot of sense.

We're reworking pricing right now before we start moving on marketing channels so we'll definitely consider the presentation of this to make it more easily understood as usage-based pricing.

You made a difference today, Prakrith! 🤜🏽 🤛🏽
