I was curious, do you use social media to market your project?
Do you think it's worth spending the time and limited resources building social media marketing channels, especially in the early phase of your project?

I for one do not like social media for personal things. If I did not have a business then I would never be on Twitter or Facebook. If I did not have to work then I would not be on Linkedin.
However, if you have a company with a product or service to promote then social media is a gift. The best part is that you can automate most of it. No other time in history can you reach an exact audience for such a low cost.
Even if the first phase of a project, start building a community now. If for nothing else than the feedback and support it will give.
You are right, and it's relatively cheap for paid promotion.
By posting useful content it can definitely grow your potential audience, but as a one man army, how do you balance between product development and product marketing effectively?
