Do you wish your product had an explainer/intro video?
by
M. Ali Kapadia
If so, could you share the factors that have kept you from having one?
What’s your email? I’ll send my thoughts and a request.
Great! I just sent you an email.
I prefer explainer videos in which the actual UI functionality is shown to those with only theoretical problem/solution statements.
So I'd say the factor that keeps me from having one is the unfinished UI.
Thanks. So for you, it’s because you know that your UI will change. So you don’t want to immortalize the unfinished UI into the video and have to redo it when the UI is finished.
When the UI is ready, do you know if you’d make the explainer video yourself, or would you rather hire someone due to some expertise?
You are tight, that's the deeper motivation.
To answer your follow-up. Honestly I'm not sure. I think I would prefer to do it myself in the beginning. One of the reasons is my (unhealthy) obsession of trying to do everything myself if possible.
The other one would be that I imagine the costs of such a video are quite high. In the early stages I expect a lot of change, so an out-of-date video would be a bad promoter of my product and repeatedly updating the video would probably be too expensive.
I think I would reach for a professional once my product is mature enough to not have substantial (UI) changes for a somewhat longer time period. Yet, it still would need the occasional update, whenever functionality or UI has larger changes, but I guess that's normal.

Philosophically speaking, if a product needs a video or explanation at all, that is a sign of the product not being distilled, refined, perfected enough. A products presentation should be self explanatory.
For example, when you open a box for an iPhone, there isn't a booklet that you have to leaf through first to understand how to use it, it is designed to be intrinsically and intuitively understandable to the end user, and its value, self-evident.
When you open a page for youtube, or instagram, same thing.
Hmm I think what you’re talking about is a video describing HOW to use the product. What I meant to ask was about WHAT a product is. I’ve modified the question by adding “intro”. Let’s see if that helps clarify.
People know what an iPhone is because they know what a smartphone is. Sometimes the HOW of your product is public and simple enough for the user to easily deduce the WHAT, making a video unnecessary and almost bloatware.
