Do you work on weekends too?

I found myself working a lot more than when I had a full time job and try not to work too much on the weekends lately. Curious what others do over the weekends :)

I do. That's the only time I can work for a few hours straight on my side projects, since I still have a job. Of course, I try to balance it out and spend time with my family too.

I wish I didn't have to work on weekends, though. Maybe one day...

Same here too. Every day from 21 pm to 1 am and every weekend

      1. 1

        That sounds tough!

        1. 1

Yes it is but I want to quit my daily job until the next September

I feel you. I truly respect people like you who has a full time job and still find time to work on side project that you are passionate about. One of my friends did it even with a new born baby around.

when I was "young" 😂 ... 25, I joined a company. My working hours were about 70 / 80 hours a week. I am now 37 and my working hours have been reduced to 40.

The thing is, what is work?

Ten years ago, I didn't consider what I do is work. I would have done it on my sparetime anyway. I just wanted to program, create things and build useful tools.

Meanwhile I am with my third company. I have employees, salaried employees, the fourth company is in planning. there are now things on the plan that feel more than work.
Planning, distribution, teaching ... controling and so on.

Secondly, I have a family, because of that I use the weekend for more free time. free time without screens. not always possible but this should become more in the next years.

But back to the hours, the 80 hours week went until I was 30 or 32. I have to say that I never had to fight with burnout. but that's because I always did projects together with other people. never completely alone. This is an important point because others often take care of you.

In addition, I did not consider most of the work to be work. I like to work, I worked in a beverage store when I was a teenager. hauling crates, driving stables, delivering drinks, delivering huge orders. But even that was fun and I enjoyed it.

    So, what is work? :-)

    1. 1

Work is doing something you want in exchange of money ;)

      1. 1

        🤔

are you sure? what if you get money for things that you just enjoy? but you would do the same without money? is that work then?

  3. 3

    whats a weekend? :-0

    1. 1

haha don't burn yourself out buddy ;)

  4. 2

Yes im working on the weekend. But since i quit my job last year and work remote only as a freelancer and co-founder it don't feels like working. It's more learning new things every day and help others to grow their business. And this means a lot of fun for me. :) But i take care of my time for doing fitness, socializing and my hobbies. :) Im working 6 hours a day and sometimes i do my weekend in the middle of the week. If there is a lot t do i have no free time for 2 oder 3 weeks. But on other weeks i have 5 days off. :) I handle this very flexible.

  5. 2

Yes. Deep Work. 36 to 48 hour projects I just want to have done. IF I did that every weekend.. I'd have 52 projects completed! and have worked almost 2 full time jobs in a year.
BUT BURNOUT IS REAL. so I don't do that EVERY weekend.

  6. 2

Before the lockdown, I tried to dedicated weekends to family. Nowadays all days are the same. I work everyday YOLO :D

    1. 1

Haha I hear you. Everyday feels almost same nowadays.

      1. 2

Totally resonates with me -- every day feels the same during COVID! I don't think it's just indie hackers -- I work full-time at a tech company and everyone is saying the same...

That said, the weekends are a little different since I don't work for the company...

      2. 1

Yup... very hard to decide what day to work and what day to rest for me.

  7. 2

During the weekends, I work but mainly on things that don't require too much focus so I can be with my family a do something together.

    1. 1

Good to know! Family always comes first ;)

  8. 1

I do work on the weekends, but only a few hours.

As a business owner, sometimes it's unavoidable--depending on the nature of your business. Unless, of course, you can hire people to cover the weekeneds.

My personality won't let me not check in on my business over the weekend though. I usually have a few things I didn't get done during the week, or an idea I want to explore before I forget it come Monday morning.

  9. 1

I've started working on weekends not because I'm hyper-productive, but more because I'm genuinely bored from the quarantine.

  10. 1

I don't for my day job, but my personal project (blog) I write the more advanced and time-consuming topics in the weekend.

  11. 1

I think there's a bit of stigma these days for saying you work on the weekends, I wish that would end.

Yes be mindful of burnout and maintaining health, but many of us truly enjoy the things we do, so why not pick up some learning and 'work' bits when it is possible.

I spend lots of time with my family (every day even pre-pandemic). I work when I feel like it. I exercise. I sleep when I'm tired. I put in my hours for IH whenever is needed, I make time for my side/personal indie stuff too.

I'm definitely not stressed about it.

  12. 1

I do, but you need some time out now and then! People boast they haven't taken time off for such and such time - but our brains need time out to do some clean up - if you sleep on a problem you perform better the next day (research from Brain Rules by John Medina) - I find it concerning that streaks on Maker Log for example are encouraged for every day that you work, when time out is part of being productive rather than pressuring yourself to be doing something every day!

    Hey mate!

    Well short answer: yes

Slightly longer answer: it’s not about the days I work on, rather about this

    1. I look at the hours I work every week / month and try to work at least a certain amount of time, but not over another amount of time.
    2. I don’t like not having anything to do. So spending days “off” is not something I enjoy. Now a day where I just relax now and then for sure that’s good and I need it. But having to take holidays or weekends is more of a pain than a pleasure to me.

So that’s what I do but to each their own need for work/life balance I think.

    Cheers,

    David from The Other WorkSpace

Yes. Since we're in lockdown in the UK there's nothing better to be doing :)

  15. 1

Sometimes it is necessary @ohsik. I find that at the beginning stages of a project, especially when trying to build up momentum, putting in those extra hours are what makes the difference. I tend to think of it as "I am working weekends now so I don't have to once I get to better product market fit". It also doesn't feel too much like work when you are enjoying that process. :)

  16. 1

It was a weird journey for me. I used to work on weekends, then I stopped working on weekends because it was not sustainable and now that we have pandemic going on, I find that I work at least a few hours per weekend. Not sure what will happen after the quarantine is lifted :)

  17. 1

I used to work all weekend but now i take sundays off to clear my mind.

  18. 1

Any time my friend, any time. Weekend, weekdays, day, night :) (my wife is not happy with it sometimes, though she is my biggest supporter :)

  19. 1

Since I only work part time, I don't usually work on weekend on digester. However, sometimes if I do have one or two hours to kill, I might work on smaller things (like reviewing my own copy, try a new feature or organize my todos). I don't actively try not to work on weekends though. All I try is to not force myself to work when I don't feel like it (while pushing myself a little when I think I'm procrastinating).

  20. 1

For the past 16 months :)

  21. 1

Been there, lately I've found my self working allot, specially on weekends and it's no the ideal way since doing more is not necessarily productive but just can't keep my hands away of the keyboard enough even when I really enjoy spending quality time with my wife and daughter

  22. 1

I love working on my projects on the weekends as well ^^ But also still employed.

  23. 1

Family comes first, but I will use 1-2 hour to working on my side project. In one month, my first son will born, I not sure about my working schedule :)

  24. 1

We've actually mandated 'no work' on weekends at my startup. If anyone is caught working (i.e. commit logs or Slack message trail), then they are fined and have to donate their fine to the anti-charity of their choice.

Note: Not to the charity of their choice, then ANTI-charity... So they have to donate to a cause that they DON'T like and don't want to support.

  25. 1

Every single day. In fact since 2018 the biggest gap without coding it was 5 days.

But is because I work full job, not as a developer, but sales plus I am a dad...

    • I work from 22.00to 04.
    • On my works brake, 30 minutes or 1 hour.
    • When I an alone at home.
  26. 1

I aim to have at least one day a week with no electronics and ideally in nature.

  27. 1

In the past 9 years I was on vacation for a ~3 times
    Never heard of weekends
    Heard about tranquilizers though...

  28. 1

I work full time, but I work on my side projects after hours and on the weekends to varying degrees of success. Mostly though I've realized I can't program in front of the TV. It causes too much context switching so I've started setting aside a place in my house to work on side-projects. I feel like when I do that I make actual progress. I wouldn't call it a sacrifice in my case because I'm not looking for commercial success.

  29. 1

Why not? When you are doing something you really, really enjoy.

  30. 1

I definitely work on Sundays, though never Saturdays. Being a part-time student and full-time intern kind of requires that, especially since I also carve out some time for personal projects and learning new things.

  31. 1

I do work on weekends when not doing family things. Maybe 8 hours worth over 2 days.

  32. 1

I do. The only time is after work in the evenings (which I find I'm doing less since the lockdown) and at the weekend though. I do ensure though that if I don't feel like not working on it or spending a few hours on it then spending time in something else to avoid burnout. I don't keep pushing myself to work on something if I don't feel it as I think that causes burn out or what you've either on just end up not being very good

  33. 1

Yes, I have been working on a side-project in weekends. That's the only time I have after a full-time job! In fact I learn everyday working on the side-projects.

Since I live alone in a different country than my parents live in, I have tons of free time. So I'm enjoying utilizing it!

  34. 1

I used to but after a couple years of working days, nights and weekends I started to get burnt out and to the point where I didn't care anymore. So now I try my hardest not to work on nights or weekends even if I'm busy and just work my 40 hours a week if possible. It's been better for my mental health that's for sure.

  35. 1

    Fuck yes I do :)

  36. 1

I try to put a time cap on how much I'll work, though sometimes I have a lot of momentum and find myself wanting to work in a way and enjoying it. When I have that momentum I'll work more because it barely feels like work then. I do however, believe it's important to set the precedent for yourself for the life you want to have as the habits you set now will likely follow after you launch or have customers etc, etc. the work culture you're setting independently (or with your peers) i think will be tough to break out of.
